Every year, Architectural Digest, the leading authority on design and architecture, publishes its AD100 list, which honors the most influential and innovative architects and interior designers in the world. The list is a reflection of the current state and future direction of the industry, as well as a celebration of the creativity and vision of the honorees.
The AD100 list for 2024, which was revealed on December 1, 2023, features a diverse and dynamic group of professionals, who are shaping our built environment and our culture in various ways. From creating sustainable and resilient solutions to addressing social and environmental challenges, to celebrating diversity and inclusion in their teams and projects, to embracing digital and technological innovation to enhance their practice and reach, the AD100 honorees are not only designing beautiful and functional spaces, but also making a positive impact on the world.
Some of the trends and themes that emerged from the list include:
Sustainability: As the climate crisis and the pandemic have heightened the awareness and urgency of environmental issues, many of the AD100 honorees are committed to creating sustainable and regenerative designs that minimize their ecological footprint and enhance the well-being of their users and communities. Examples include Studio Mumbai, which uses local materials and crafts to create organic and harmonious structures; MASS Design Group, which applies a holistic and human-centered approach to address health, education, and social justice through architecture; and Bjarke Ingels Group, which combines playful and pragmatic design with innovative engineering to create projects that are both aesthetically and environmentally friendly.
Diversity: The AD100 list for 2024 is the most diverse and inclusive in its history, reflecting the growing recognition and representation of different voices and perspectives in the industry. The list features 40 women, 28 people of color, and 15 LGBTQ+ individuals, as well as professionals from various backgrounds, cultures, and regions. Some of the honorees who are breaking barriers and celebrating diversity include David Adjaye, who is the first Black architect to receive the prestigious Royal Gold Medal from the Royal Institute of British Architects; Kelly Wearstler, who is one of the most influential and successful female interior designers in the world; and Studio KO, which is a French-Moroccan duo that blends contemporary and traditional elements to create elegant and eclectic spaces.
Social impact: Many of the AD100 honorees are using their skills and talents to create positive social change and improve the lives of people and communities. They are involved in various initiatives and projects that address issues such as affordable housing, education, health care, cultural heritage, and social justice. Some of the examples include Alejandro Aravena, who is the founder of Elemental, a social housing and urban development firm that empowers low-income families and communities; Michael Maltzan, who is the architect of several projects that provide housing and services for the homeless population in Los Angeles; and Snøhetta, which is a multidisciplinary firm that creates public and civic spaces that foster dialogue, interaction, and democracy.
