In 1933, an eighteen-year-old Austrian actress ran naked through a sunlit forest, plunged into a lake, and simulated orgasm on camera. The film was Gustav Machatý’s Ecstasy. Pope Pius XI condemned it. Austrian censors banned it. The young actress’s new husband, an Austrian arms dealer, spent $280,000 – roughly $6.8 million today – trying to buy and destroy every existing print. That actress was Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler. Within four years, she would flee her husband by disguising herself as a maid, cross the Atlantic, and become Hedy Lamarr – the most beautiful woman in the world. Within a decade of that, she would co-invent the technology that now runs inside every smartphone, laptop, and wireless router on the planet. She would never receive a cent for it.
Vienna Before the Fall
Lamarr was born on 9 November 1914 into Vienna’s assimilated Jewish bourgeoisie. Her father, Emil Kiesler, directed the Creditanstalt-Bankverein, Austria-Hungary’s largest bank. Her mother, Gertrud, was a concert pianist. The household was cultured, wealthy, and – in retrospect – living on borrowed time. By her mid-teens, Hedy had studied at Max Reinhardt’s Berlin dramatic school and landed minor roles in Austrian and German films. Her appearance in Ecstasy in 1933 made her internationally notorious. It also caught the attention of Friedrich “Fritz” Mandl, a munitions magnate nearly twice her age, chairman of the Hirtenberger Patronen-Fabrik. They married in 1933. She was eighteen; he was thirty-three.
The marriage was a cage dressed in silk. Mandl forbade her from acting, attempted to suppress Ecstasy by purchasing every print he could find, and required her to convert to Catholicism. At his estate, she was expected to be a silent ornament at dinners attended by Mussolini, high-ranking Austrian fascists, and – according to her own later account – Adolf Hitler. What Mandl did not know was that his young wife was listening. At those tables, weapons systems, radio-controlled torpedoes, naval telemetry, and the vulnerability of signal jamming were discussed freely. The guests dismissed her as decorative. She was memorising everything.
In 1937, she packed a suitcase with jewellery, reportedly drugged her maid, and fled to Paris, then London. She never saw Austria again.
Hollywood and the Drafting Table
Aboard the ocean liner Normandie, Lamarr met Louis B. Mayer, the head of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. He offered her a contract, and she adopted the name Hedy Lamarr – Mayer invented it, borrowing the surname from silent-film actress Barbara La Marr. By 1938, with her performance in Algiers, she was one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars. Her filmography through the 1940s reads like a roll call of Golden Age prestige: Boom Town (1940) with Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy; Ziegfeld Girl (1941); Tortilla Flat (1942), adapted from Steinbeck; and Cecil B. DeMille’s Samson and Delilah (1949), her biggest commercial success.
What the studio publicity machines never photographed was what happened after hours. Lamarr would skip the parties. She would sit at a drafting table in her home – and, according to her biographer Richard Rhodes, at a fully equipped engineering station in her studio trailer – working on inventions. She designed an improved traffic stoplight. She sketched aircraft wings inspired by the fastest birds and fish, an exercise that caught the attention of Howard Hughes, who supplied her with scientific equipment and access to his aviation engineers. She devised a tablet that dissolved in water to produce a flavoured carbonated drink. The invention that mattered was still taking shape in her mind.
The U-Boat That Changed Everything
The catalyst arrived on 17 September 1940. The German submarine U-48, commanded by Heinrich Bleichrodt, torpedoed the British ocean liner SS City of Benares in the mid-Atlantic. The ship was carrying evacuated children to Canada under the Children’s Overseas Reception Board scheme. Seventy-seven children died. As an Austrian-Jewish immigrant who had fled the Nazi regime, Lamarr was devastated. She resolved to turn her knowledge of Axis weapons systems into something that could sink U-boats.
The problem with radio-controlled torpedoes was straightforward: the signal that guided them could be jammed. If the enemy detected the frequency, they could flood it with interference, and the torpedo would go blind. Lamarr’s insight was that if both the transmitter on the launching vessel and the receiver in the torpedo could simultaneously and unpredictably jump across multiple frequencies in a synchronised sequence, the enemy would never be able to jam the signal for more than a fraction of a second. The idea was elegant. The execution required a mechanical synchronisation mechanism – and that is where George Antheil came in.
Antheil was a Trenton-born avant-garde composer, pianist, and self-described “bad boy of music” whose 1924 composition Ballet Mécanique had attempted to synchronise sixteen mechanical player pianos. The two met at a Hollywood dinner party in 1940. Antheil later recalled that Lamarr “said that she did not feel very comfortable, sitting there in Hollywood and making lots of money when things were in such a state.” Together, they adapted the player-piano synchronisation mechanism for military telemetry. Their “Secret Communication System” used miniaturised, slotted paper rolls – identical in principle to piano rolls – installed in both the torpedo and the launching vessel. The pattern of perforations dictated the frequency jumps. In a direct tribute to the instrument that inspired the design, the system was engineered to hop across exactly 88 distinct radio frequencies, matching the 88 keys on a standard piano keyboard.
A Patent, a Rejection, and a Kiss
They submitted their design to the National Inventors Council. On 10 June 1941, they filed a patent application – Lamarr under her current legal name, Hedy Kiesler Markey – and on 11 August 1942, U.S. Patent No. 2,292,387 was officially granted.
The Navy rejected it. The mechanical paper-roll apparatus, officials said, was too bulky and fragile to be fitted inside a combat torpedo. Instead of deploying her engineering, the government suggested, Lamarr would better serve the war effort by using her celebrity to sell war bonds. She complied. In September 1942, she launched a fundraising tour across 210 American cities. At each rally, a sailor named Eddie Rhodes – planted in the audience – would be called to the stage. Lamarr would flirt with him, then ask the crowd whether she should kiss him if enough bonds were purchased. The audience always said yes. After the bonds were sold, she kissed Rhodes, and they moved on to the next city. The tour raised an estimated $25 million – over $343 million in today’s money. She also volunteered at the Hollywood Canteen, dancing with servicemen and washing dishes.
Meanwhile, the patent she and Antheil had donated to the government gathered dust. The invention was classified, never deployed during the war, and eventually allowed to expire in 1959 – seventeen years after it was granted, and three years after Antheil’s death. Neither Lamarr nor Antheil ever received a penny from it.
From Classified Archives to Your Pocket
The concept did not die with the patent. In 1957, engineers at the Sylvania Electronic Systems Division revisited Patent 2,292,387 and replaced the mechanical paper rolls with solid-state transistors, miniaturising the system into something practical. By 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the U.S. Navy deployed the first operational iteration of Lamarr and Antheil’s frequency-hopping technology on ships enforcing the naval blockade of Cuba, securing communications against Soviet interception.
As the decades progressed, the military classification of spread-spectrum technology was lifted. The fundamental architecture of continuously shifting frequencies across a multi-channel spectrum became the bedrock of the digital age. It underpins Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) cellular networks, the Global Positioning System (GPS), Bluetooth pairing, and the IEEE 802.11 standards that govern all modern Wi-Fi. As the National WW2 Museum has documented, “the technology was later used for military communications, including during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, and was a precursor to modern-day technologies such as Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth.” Every time you connect a pair of headphones without a wire or load a map on your phone, you are using a system whose core principle was first patented by a film star and an avant-garde composer working from a drafting table in 1942.
The Long Wait for Recognition
Lamarr’s intellectual contributions were overshadowed for decades by the persona the MGM publicity machine had constructed. As Richard Rhodes, her biographer, told History.com: “Hedy always felt that people didn’t appreciate her for her intelligence – that her beauty got in the way.” Antheil, writing in his 1945 memoir The Bad Boy of Music, tried to set the record straight: “The Hedy whom we know is not the Hedy you know. You know something which the M.G.M. publicity department has, in all its cunning, dreamed up. There is no such Hedy. … Hedy is very, very bright. Compared to most Hollywood actresses we know, Hedy is an intellectual giant.”
The recognition, when it came, arrived almost entirely posthumously. In 1997, the Electronic Frontier Foundation jointly honoured Lamarr and Antheil with the Pioneer Award. That same year, Lamarr became the first woman to receive the BULBIE Gnass Spirit of Achievement Award, sometimes called the “Oscar of inventing.” She was eighty-two, living reclusively in Casselberry, Florida, and did not attend the ceremony. She sent an audio recording: “Well, it’s about time.” She died on 19 January 2000 at the age of eighty-five, having never been publicly recognised by the scientific or military establishment during her active years. In 2014, she was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. The Jewish Museum Vienna staged an exhibition titled Lady Bluetooth in 2019, presenting her dual legacy as Hollywood star and wireless pioneer. The 2017 documentary Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, directed by Alexandra Dean, earned a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and brought her story to a new generation.
Lamarr’s life resists the tidy narrative that Hollywood and the technology industry both prefer. She was not a neglected genius rescued by posthumous fame – she was an active inventor deliberately sidelined by a military establishment that saw a pretty face and told her to use it. The tragedy is not that she was forgotten. It is that she was known, and dismissed anyway. Her 88 frequencies – one for each key on a piano – now pulse through the invisible infrastructure of the connected world. The woman who designed them spent her final decades alone in a Florida house, talking for hours on the telephone to friends and family. The technology she built was everywhere except in her own hands.
