Every time you connect to a Wi-Fi network, pair a Bluetooth earbud, or get satellite navigation on your phone, you are using a principle first patented by a woman whom the world called the most beautiful in it. Hedy Lamarr – Viennese émigré, MGM glamour icon, and self-taught engineer – co-invented the frequency-hopping spread-spectrum technique in 1942, two years before she would star in Cecil B. DeMille’s Samson and Delilah. The United States Navy rejected the invention, classified it as top secret, and told Lamarr she could do more for the war effort by selling kisses. The patent expired without generating a penny. Decades later, the technology she conceived would underpin a market valued at an estimated $30 billion.
The Making of Hedwig Kiesler
Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler was born on 9 November 1914 in Vienna, the only child of Emil Kiesler, a banking director of Galician-Jewish origin, and Gertrud Kiesler, a concert pianist from a wealthy Hungarian-Jewish family. Her mother had converted to Catholicism and raised her daughter accordingly, though Hedy was not baptised at birth. The household was cultured, prosperous, and – crucially – intellectually curious. Emil Kiesler took his daughter on long walks through Vienna, explaining how streetcars worked, how the power plant generated electricity, how machines did what they did. By the age of five, Hedy was taking apart her music box and reassembling it piece by piece.
“She did not grow up with any technical education, but she did have this personal connection,” Richard Rhodes, the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author of Hedy’s Folly, told History.com. “She loved her father dearly, so it’s easy to see how from that she might have developed an interest in the subject. And also it prepared her to be what she really was, a kind of amateur inventor.”
At twelve, she won a beauty contest in Vienna. At sixteen, she was discovered by Max Reinhardt, the legendary theatre impresario, who called her the most beautiful girl in the world. She studied under him in Berlin, appeared in her first film – Geld auf der Straße – in 1930, and two years later was cast in Gustav Machatý’s Czech film Ecstasy. The role, which included scenes of nudity and simulated orgasm, caused an international scandal and made her famous. It also attracted the attention of Friedrich “Fritz” Mandl.
The Arms Dealer’s Wife
In August 1933, Kiesler married Mandl, an Austrian munitions manufacturer who controlled the Hirtenberger ammunition concern and was once the richest man in Austria. She was eighteen; he was thirty-three. Mandl had political ties to Mussolini’s fascist Italy and connections to the emerging Nazi regime, though he was himself of Jewish descent. To marry him, Hedy converted to Catholicism.
Mandl treated his young wife as an ornament. He brought her to business dinners and conferences with scientists and military officials, parading her beauty while discussing torpedo guidance systems and ammunition contracts. These gatherings – which included guests such as Mussolini himself – inadvertently gave Lamarr her technical education. She absorbed what she heard about radio-controlled weapons, about the vulnerability of single-frequency communication to jamming, about the physics of guidance systems. As the National WWII Museum records, “It was during the dinner parties that business discussions came up. A frequent topic of conversation was how Mandl’s torpedoes would often completely miss their targets.”
Lamarr later described the marriage as imprisonment. “It was his game to keep me a prisoner. It was my game to escape. He lost,” she said, as quoted in Lady Bluetooth, a study of her life. In 1937, she fled – slipping away, according to most accounts, while Mandl slept, carrying a maid’s uniform and whatever she could fit in a bag. She made it to Paris, then London, where she met Louis B. Mayer, the head of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. On the same transatlantic crossing to New York as Mayer, she secured a contract at $500 a week, contingent on learning English. Mayer renamed her Hedy Lamarr.
Hollywood and the Inventing Table
Starting with Algiers in 1938, Lamarr became one of the biggest stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age. She appeared opposite Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy in Boom Town (1940), with Tracy again in Tortilla Flat (1942), and as Delilah in DeMille’s biblical epic Samson and Delilah (1949), her most commercially successful film. She was reportedly producer Hal Wallis’s first choice for Ilsa Lund in Casablanca – the part that went to Ingrid Bergman.
Behind the screen persona, however, Lamarr was profoundly restless. After working twelve- or fifteen-hour days at MGM, she would often skip Hollywood parties and sit down at what Rhodes called her “inventing table” – a drafting table in her home, backed by a wall of engineering books. She was not a trained engineer or mathematician, but she was an ingenious problem-solver. Her inventions included a traffic light designed to be more driver-friendly, a tablet that produced a cola-like drink when dissolved in water (Howard Hughes once lent her two chemists to develop it), and a glow-in-the-dark dog collar.
“Hedy always felt that people didn’t appreciate her for her intelligence – that her beauty got in the way,” Rhodes told History.com.
The Secret Communication System
In September 1940, a Nazi U-boat torpedoed the British passenger liner SS City of Benares, killing 77 children being evacuated to Canada. The atrocity galvanised Lamarr, a Jewish immigrant from Nazi-occupied Austria. She resolved to contribute to the Allied war effort.
At a Hollywood dinner party that year, she met George Antheil, a Trenton-born avant-garde composer known for his confrontational Ballet Mécanique (1923–24), a score originally written for sixteen synchronised player pianos. Antheil had spent years trying to make machines communicate with one another in synchrony. Lamarr brought knowledge of munitions and torpedo control systems gleaned from her years with Mandl. Together, they conceived a method by which a radio transmitter and receiver could simultaneously “hop” across frequencies in a pseudorandom pattern, making the signal virtually impossible to jam or intercept.
The mechanism was elegant in its simplicity. As the Smithsonian Institution describes it, Lamarr and Antheil devised a method of synchronisation using paper-tape mechanisms similar to those found in player pianos. The patent detailed the use of 88 frequencies – one for each key of the piano – allowing the communication to hop in harmony. “If a radio transmitter and receiver are synchronised to change their tuning simultaneously, hopping together randomly from frequency to frequency, then the radio signal passing between them cannot be jammed,” Rhodes writes in Hedy’s Folly.
They called it a “Secret Communication System.” Lamarr hired the Los Angeles firm Lyon & Lyon to draft the patent application. In early 1941, the National Inventors Council connected Antheil with Samuel Stuart Mackeown, a professor of electrical engineering at Caltech, to consult on the electronics. On 10 June 1941, Lamarr and Antheil filed their patent. It was granted on 11 August 1942 as U.S. Patent No. 2,292,387, listing Lamarr under her married name at the time: Hedy Kiesler Markey.
Navy Rejection and Wartime Aftermath
When Antheil pitched the idea to the U.S. Navy, the response was dismissive. As Rhodes recounts, the Navy’s reaction amounted to: “What do you want to do, put a player piano in a torpedo? Get out of here!” The patent was classified as top secret and locked away. The technology of the era could not yet miniaturise the synchronisation mechanism sufficiently for practical deployment.
Lamarr and Antheil donated their patent to the Navy and never received any money from it. Both returned to their respective careers. Antheil continued composing and died in 1959, largely forgotten. Lamarr sold war bonds – reportedly raising $7 million for the cause – and continued making films.
The Navy would not use frequency-hopping technology until 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, three years after the patent had expired. Over 1,000 subsequent spread-spectrum patents have referenced the Lamarr-Antheil invention. The principles it established became foundational to Bluetooth, early Wi-Fi, GPS, and CDMA mobile phone technology. The U.S. Naval Institute estimated the market value of the concept at $30 billion by 2017.
Recognition, Too Late
Lamarr’s film career declined in the 1950s. Her last screen appearance was in The Female Animal (1958). She received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960, published a disputed autobiography, Ecstasy and Me, in 1966, and was arrested twice for shoplifting – neither charge resulting in a conviction. By the 1970s, she had withdrawn from public life entirely. She lived in Altamonte Springs, then Casselberry, a suburb north of Orlando, Florida, where she spent her days communicating with friends and family almost entirely by telephone. She was legally blind in her final years.
It was not until the 1990s that engineers realised the “Hedwig Kiesler Markey” on the 1942 patent was the same Hedy Lamarr who had lit up the silver screen. In March 1997, the Electronic Frontier Foundation awarded Lamarr and Antheil its Pioneer Award. Lamarr’s son Anthony accepted on her behalf, playing a recorded message from his mother: “In acknowledgement of your honouring me, I hope you feel as well as I feel good about it, and it was not done in vain.”
That same year, she became the first woman to receive the Invention Convention’s BULBIE Gnass Spirit of Achievement Award, sometimes called the “Oscars of inventing.” In 1998, she was awarded the Viktor Kaplan Medal by the Austrian Association of Patent Holders and Inventors.
When asked how it felt not to be recognised for her invention, Lamarr quoted a line she attributed to Kent Keith: “The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds. Think big anyway.”
Death and Legacy
On 19 January 2000, Lamarr was found dead at her home in Casselberry. She was eighty-five. The cause was heart disease. Her son Anthony scattered part of her ashes in the Vienna Woods, as she had wished; the remainder were interred in 2014 at Vienna’s Central Cemetery, in an honorary grave near those of Beethoven and Brahms. A memorial stone was erected, engraved with her own words: “Films have a certain place in a certain time period. Technology is forever.”
In 2014, she and Antheil were posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. The Jewish Museum Vienna acquired her personal archive – photographs, letters, documents, and hand-drawn sketches of torpedo defence systems – and staged the exhibition “Lady Bluetooth: Hedy Lamarr” from November 2019 to December 2020. The City of Vienna has awarded the Hedy Lamarr Prize to innovative female scientists since 2018. In 2017, the documentary Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, directed by Alexandra Dean, brought her dual legacy to a new audience. A street in Vienna’s 12th district, the Hedy-Lamarr-Weg, was named in her honour in 2006.
The irony of Lamarr’s life is not that she was an actress who happened to invent something useful. It is that the very beauty for which the world celebrated her was the instrument that made her intelligence invisible. For decades, the most commercially significant wireless technology of the twentieth century was locked inside a patent filed under a name the public did not connect to the famous face. The woman who escaped a fascist arms dealer, who sat at a drafting table after fifteen-hour studio days, who conceived a method of secure communication that would eventually reach every handset and laptop on the planet – she was never allowed to be anything other than beautiful.
Her technology endures. Her films mostly do not. The frequency-hopping principle she co-invented now protects military communications, enables civilian wireless networks, and mediates the signals that bind the modern world together. It is, in the most literal sense, the invisible architecture of connectivity. And it belongs to a woman who was told to go sell kisses.
