Victoria Beckham has always been a style icon, but her latest collection at Paris Fashion Week showed a new side of her creative vision. Inspired by her childhood dream of becoming a ballet dancer, the British designer presented a graceful and elegant line that blended ballet elements with modern fashion.
The Collection
The collection, which was revealed in a grand 18th-century Paris townhouse once lived in by Karl Lagerfeld, featured fluid jersey dresses, soft pastel eveningwear, and structured blazers with exposed seams. The colours and silhouettes were influenced by the paintings of Edgar Degas, who famously depicted ballet dancers in his works. Beckham also incorporated details from her own ballet past, such as leg warmers, oversized knits, and hair nets.
“I wanted to explore the connection between ballet and fashion, and how they both have this sense of movement and discipline,” Beckham said in a backstage interview. “I also wanted to celebrate my own history as a dancer, and how that shaped me as a person and a designer.”
The Reception
The show was attended by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner, who praised Beckham for her sophisticated and feminine designs. The collection also received positive reviews from critics, who noted the refined and poetic quality of the garments.
“Beckham has elevated her aesthetic to a new level of elegance and refinement, while staying true to her signature style,” wrote Alexandra Bregman, a Forbes contributor who covers art and fashion. “She has successfully merged the worlds of ballet and fashion, creating a collection that is both nostalgic and contemporary.”
However, the show was not without controversy, as animal rights activists from Peta disrupted the runway to protest against Beckham’s use of leather and fur. The protesters held signs that read “Victoria: Fur Is Dead” and “Stop Killing Animals”. They were quickly escorted out by security, but not before causing a commotion among the audience and the models.
Beckham, who has previously faced criticism for using animal products in her collections, did not comment on the incident. She later posted a photo on Instagram of herself with her husband David Beckham and their four children, thanking them for their support.
“I’m so grateful for my family, who always stand by me and inspire me,” she wrote. “Thank you for making this show possible, and for sharing this special moment with me.”
The Expansion
The collection, which was Beckham’s second show in Paris after moving from London last year, was part of her expansion into a global fashion house. Along with her clothing line, she also launched her first fragrance range, which she described as “a sensory journey that evokes intimate moments and nostalgic memories”.
The fragrances, which are named after places that are meaningful to Beckham, such as London, Paris, and the British countryside, aim to complement the mood and style of the collection. They are available in eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and candle formats.
“This collection is very personal to me, and I wanted to create fragrances that reflect that,” Beckham said. “They are meant to capture the essence of who I am, and where I come from.”
