Ten years ago, scientists found a planet called Kepler-452b. It’s often called Earth’s twin.
It orbits a star like our sun. Its year is about the same length as ours. But one big difference could change everything. Its gravity is much stronger.
This might sound like a problem. But it could mean that any civilization there would never face the same threat of nuclear war that we did.
A Bigger, Heavier Earth
We can’t see Kepler-452b directly. It’s about 1,800 light-years away. Scientists found it by watching its star, noticing the light dim slightly as the planet passed in front.
From what we can tell, it’s about 1.6 times bigger than Earth. Because of this, its gravity is roughly twice as strong. This single fact has huge consequences.
Paradise or Furnace?
Of course, we first have to ask if anything could live there at all. With a brighter sun, there is a risk of a “runaway greenhouse effect.” This is what happened to Venus. The planet gets hotter, releasing more gas, which makes it even hotter, until the oceans boil away.
But scientists believe Kepler-452b may have avoided this. If its atmosphere has the right mix of gases, its surface could be just a few degrees warmer than Earth’s. Even if the planet is very hot, life might still survive at the cooler poles.
A Cold War That Never Was
Let’s imagine a civilisation like ours grew up there. They would have been spared our greatest fear.
During the Cold War, the world was shaped by the threat of ballistic missiles. These weapons could cross the planet in about 30 minutes. There was no way to stop them. This created a terrifying standoff, where both sides knew destruction was only minutes away.
On a planet with double the gravity, everything changes.
To launch the same warhead, a missile would need to be about four times more massive. A standard missile on Earth would become a huge, expensive monster there. The smaller missiles that formed the backbone of the US and Soviet forces would be the size of their biggest, rarest rockets.
Building a large arsenal would be incredibly difficult and costly. The same goes for submarines carrying missiles. The threat of instant, overwhelming attack would be gone. Perhaps it’s a strange thought, but physics might have saved them from politics.
A World Without Stars
This high gravity comes at a price. While it might prevent a nuclear hair-trigger, it would make space travel almost impossible.
To send the first person into orbit would require a rocket as powerful as the enormous Saturn V that took men to the moon. A lunar mission from Kepler-452b would be beyond reach.
So if people exist on this other Earth, they may live on a safer world. But they might look up at the sky and know they can never leave.
