J.R.R. Tolkien

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, or as he is more commonly known, J.R.R. Tolkien, was born in 1892 in Bloemfontein, now in the Republic of South Africa, and became one of the world’s most influential fantasy writers. He was also an academic, teaching at Oxford.

As well as being a writer, Tolkien was also a philologist. He studied many languages, including English, German, French, Latin, Old English and Old Norse, which is reflected in his work creating languages for the various races such as Elves, Dwarves and Orcs that inhabit Middle-earth.

His books

It all began with The Hobbit, or The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring in 1937. This tale of the adventures of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins captured the hearts of readers.

The Hobbit served as a precursor to the famous The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It consists of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, which were published as separate books in 1954 and 1955. This epic about the hobbit Frodo Baggins, who embarks on a perilous journey to destroy the One Ring, has gained immense popularity for its gripping plot and the rich world created by Tolkien.

Films

The credit for bringing the Middle-earth universe to the big screen goes to Peter Jackson. The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, released in 2001, 2002 and 2003, brought worldwide fame not only to the books themselves, but also to New Zealand, where the films were filmed. It touched on key plot points that were transformed into cinematic masterpieces.

It’s also worth mentioning the talented cast, including Elijah Wood as Frodo, Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, Sean Bean as Boromir, Orlando Bloom as Legolas and Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf, among many others.

This is the incredible world of fantasy that J.R.R. Tolkien created – rich, wise and vast. It is a world that continues to inspire and captivate fantasy enthusiasts around the world, and has a rightful place in the hearts of those who appreciate great storytelling.
