The Confusion Over the Order of Operations

In that case, the correct rule is to do the operations from left to right, regardless of their rank. This is also known as the left-to-right rule, or the horizontal rule.

Using the correct rule, the problem can be solved as follows:

8 / 2 (2+2) = ?

First, we do the operation in parentheses, which is 2+2=4.

8 / 2 (4) = ?

Then, we do the division, which is 8 / 2 = 4.

The Common Mistakes
