Whether you are looking for a thrilling crime drama, a historical saga, a fantasy adventure, or a sci-fi spectacle, there is something for everyone in the upcoming lineup of shows. Here are some of the best TV series to watch this winter, from December 2023 to January 2024.
The Guilty Ones / Culprits
If you are a fan of British thrillers, you won’t want to miss The Guilty Ones, a new series from Hulu that follows a group of former robbers who have left their criminal past behind and settled into a peaceful life. However, their tranquility is shattered when a mysterious killer starts hunting them down, one by one. Who is behind the murders, and what is their motive? The Guilty Ones stars Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, best known for his roles in The Misfits and Utopia, as the leader of the gang. The showrunner and director is J. Blakeson, who helmed the acclaimed film The Con. The Guilty Ones premieres on December 8th on Hulu.
The Crown
The Crown, the critically acclaimed and award-winning series that chronicles the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II, is coming to an end with its sixth and final season. The second half of the season, which will be released on December 14th on Netflix, covers the period from 1997 to 2005, a turbulent time for the British monarchy and the nation. The season will feature some of the most dramatic and controversial events in recent history, such as the tragic death of Princess Diana, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, and the passing of Princess Margaret. The Crown boasts an impressive cast, including Imelda Staunton as the Queen, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, and Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret.
Report on the Riot of Spirits / Yu Yu Hakusho
Anime fans, rejoice! Netflix is bringing back one of the most beloved and influential anime series of all time, Yu Yu Hakusho, based on the manga by Yoshihiro Togashi. The series follows Yusuke, a teenage delinquent who dies while saving a child from a car accident, and is given a second chance at life as a detective for the spirit world. Along with his friends and allies, he battles demons and other supernatural threats that endanger both the living and the dead. The new series, titled Report on the Riot of Spirits, is a live-action adaptation that stars Takumi Kitamura as Yusuke, and is directed by Sho Tsukikawa, who also directed the hit film I Want to Eat Your Pancreas. Report on the Riot of Spirits premieres on December 14th on Netflix.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians
Fans of Rick Riordan’s bestselling book series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, have been waiting for a faithful and satisfying adaptation of the stories for a long time. After the disappointing film versions, Disney+ is giving the fans what they want with a new multi-part film series that will follow the adventures of Percy Jackson, a 12-year-old boy who discovers that he is the son of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. Along with his friends, he embarks on a quest to find Zeus’s missing lightning bolt, and prevent a war among the gods. The first film, titled The Lightning Thief, stars Walker Scobell as Percy, and is produced by Jonathan Steinberg, who also created the series See. Percy Jackson and the Olympians premieres on December 20th on Disney+.
What If…?
Marvel fans, get ready for a wild ride with What If…?, a new animated series that explores alternate scenarios and realities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Based on the comic book series of the same name, the show features some of the most popular and beloved characters from the MCU, such as Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, and more, in different and unexpected situations. What if Peggy Carter became Captain Britain? What if T’Challa was Star-Lord? What if Loki had the hammer of Thor? The possibilities are endless, and the consequences are unpredictable. The show is narrated by Jeffrey Wright as The Watcher, a cosmic being who observes the multiverse. The showrunner is Ashley Bradley, who also worked on Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia. Season 2 of What If…? premieres on December 22nd on Disney+.
The Creature from Gyeongseong / Gyeongseong keuricheo
If you are looking for a horror film that will keep you on the edge of your seat, look no further than The Creature from Gyeongseong, a new Netflix original from South Korea. The film is set in colonial Gyeongseon in 1945, a time of oppression and turmoil. A wealthy young man and a detective encounter a monstrous creature that is born of human greed and corruption, and must fight to survive and stop it. The film stars Park Seo-joon, who also starred in the Oscar-winning film Parasite, and Han Seo-hee, who appeared in the drama 100 Day Husband. The showrunner is Kang Eun-kyung, who also created the series Teacher Kim, Dr. Romantic, and the director is Jung Tongyun, who also directed the series I’m Crazy, But That’s Okay. The Creature from Gyeongseong (or, alternatively, The Creature of Gyeongseong) premieres on December 22nd on Netflix.
Berlin / Berlin
Fans of the hit Spanish series Money Heist, also known as La Casa de Papel, will be thrilled to know that there is a spin-off series coming soon, focusing on one of the most charismatic and controversial characters of the show, Berlin. Berlin, played by Pedro Alonso, is the mastermind behind the heist of the Royal Mint of Spain, and the brother of the Professor, the leader of the gang. The spin-off series, simply titled Berlin, will explore his backstory and his involvement in another heist, this time of the Chez Vienot auction house in Paris. The series will take place before the events of Money Heist, and will also feature some of the other characters from the original show, such as Raquel, played by Itziar Itugno, and Alicia, played by Naiva Nimri. The series Berlin will be released on December 29th on Netflix.
