London is a city that never sleeps, especially in December, when the festive spirit fills the air with joy and excitement. Whether you are looking for cultural events, family-friendly activities, or dazzling displays of lights and fireworks, London has something for everyone this month. Here are some of the events and activities that are happening in London in December 2023, to help you plan your perfect winter getaway.
Christmas at Kew
One of the most popular attractions in London during the holiday season is Christmas at Kew, a spectacular trail of lights, music and colours around the famous botanic gardens after dark. From November 15 to January 7, you can marvel at the illuminated trees, sculptures, tunnels and fountains, and enjoy festive food and drinks along the way. This year, the trail features a new installation by artist Chila Kumari Singh Burman, inspired by Hindu mythology and British Asian culture.
Winter Wonderland
If you are looking for a one-stop destination for festive fun, look no further than Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, the world’s ultimate winter spectacle. From November 17 to January 1, you can experience a variety of attractions, including fairground rides, ice skating, Christmas markets, circus shows, comedy clubs, and live music. You can also visit the Magical Ice Kingdom, a frozen wonderland with ice sculptures, slides and a bar, or watch a dazzling performance of Cinderella on Ice.
Kingdom of Winter
For a new and immersive festive experience, head to the Kingdom of Winter at ExCel London, an indoor adventure that has everything from a winter-themed circus, ice skating and an alpine-style Christmas market. From December 8 to January 7, you can explore the four realms of the kingdom: Frost, Fire, Forest and Fantasy, and meet the characters that inhabit them. You can also enjoy a festive feast at the Winter Banquet, or sip mulled wine at the Fire Bar.
The Luna Winter Cinema
If you are a fan of classic Christmas movies, you won’t want to miss the Luna Winter Cinema at Kensington Palace, where you can watch your favourite films on a big screen in a stunning historic setting. From December 11 to 15, you can cosy up with a blanket and a hot chocolate, and enjoy screenings of Home Alone, Love Actually, Elf, The Holiday, and more. You can also upgrade your experience with a VIP sofa, a complimentary drink and popcorn.
The Magic of Christmas at London Zoo
For a wild and wonderful Christmas, visit The Magic of Christmas at London Zoo, where you can see the animals in a festive mood, and join in the fun activities. From November 25 to January 7, you can follow the Christmas Sleigh Trail, send a letter to Santa, or meet the big man himself at his grotto. You can also watch the animals enjoy their special Christmas treats, such as mince pies for the meerkats, and sprouts for the otters.
Shrek the Halls! at Shrek’s Adventure! London
If you are looking for a family-friendly alternative to the traditional Christmas attractions, why not swap the North Pole for the Swamp at Shrek the Halls! at Shrek’s Adventure! London1? From December 1 to 24, you can join Shrek and his friends on a magical adventure, where you can explore Far Far Away, meet your favourite characters, and enjoy a festive finale with a special guest appearance by Santa.
Ice Skating in London
One of the best ways to enjoy the winter season in London is to go ice skating on one of the many outdoor rinks that pop up across the city. Whether you are a beginner or a pro, you can glide on the ice with a stunning backdrop, such as the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Somerset House, or the Natural History Museum. You can also find ice rinks at Winter Wonderland, the Kingdom of Winter, and Canary Wharf.
Astronomy Photographer of the Year
If you are fascinated by the wonders of the night sky, you won’t want to miss the Astronomy Photographer of the Year exhibition at the National Maritime Museum, where you can see the winning and shortlisted images from the world’s largest astrophotography competition. From September 16 to December 31, you can admire the stunning photos of planets, stars, galaxies, and auroras, and learn more about the science and stories behind them.
Diva
If you are a fan of pop culture and female icons, you will love Diva, a new exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum that celebrates the power and glamour of divas from the 19th century to the present day. From June 24 to April 7, you can see more than 300 objects, including costumes, jewellery, photographs, and memorabilia, that showcase the style and influence of divas such as Maria Callas, Madonna, Beyoncé, and Lady Gaga.
New Year’s Eve in London
No visit to London in December is complete without joining the New Year’s Eve celebrations, which are among the most spectacular in the world. You can watch the famous fireworks display over the River Thames, which is accompanied by music and a countdown to midnight. You can also enjoy a variety of parties, concerts, and events across the city, or take a cruise on the river for a unique view of the fireworks. Alternatively, you can watch the celebrations on TV or online, and toast to the new year from the comfort of your home.
