Christmas is a time of joy, celebration, and tradition. But it is also a time of consumption, waste, and emissions. One of the most iconic symbols of the holiday season is the Christmas tree, which adorns millions of homes around the world. But which kind of tree is better for the planet: a natural tree or an artificial one?

Many people assume that buying an artificial tree is the more eco-friendly option, as it saves real trees from being cut down and can be reused for years. However, the reality is more complicated, as artificial trees have their own environmental drawbacks, such as the use of plastic, the emissions from transportation, and the difficulty of recycling.

On the other hand, natural trees are not necessarily the villains they are often portrayed to be. While they do require land, water, and pesticides to grow, they also provide benefits such as absorbing carbon dioxide, producing oxygen, and supporting wildlife. Moreover, most natural trees are grown on farms specifically for the purpose of being harvested, and are replaced by new ones every year. And when disposed of properly, natural trees can be composted or mulched, returning nutrients to the soil.

So, how can consumers make the most informed and responsible choice? Here are some factors to consider when deciding between natural and artificial Christmas trees.

Materials

Artificial trees are typically made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic, a petroleum-based material that is non-biodegradable and potentially toxic. PVC plastic can release harmful chemicals such as dioxins and phthalates, which can affect human health and the environment. Some artificial trees may also contain lead, a heavy metal that can cause neurological damage and cancer. According to a study by the American Christmas Tree Association, an artificial tree has a carbon footprint of about 40 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent, which is equivalent to driving about 100 miles in a car.

Natural trees, on the other hand, are made of organic materials that are biodegradable and renewable. Natural trees can also act as carbon sinks, meaning they absorb more carbon dioxide than they emit. According to the same study, a natural tree has a carbon footprint of about 3.5 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent, which is equivalent to driving about 9 miles in a car. However, this figure can vary depending on the type, size, and origin of the tree, as well as the use of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides.

Transportation

Artificial trees are mostly imported from China, where they are manufactured in factories that consume large amounts of energy and emit greenhouse gases. The trees are then shipped across the ocean and transported by trucks to warehouses, distributors, and retailers, adding to their carbon footprint. According to a report by the consulting firm Ellipsos, an artificial tree would have to be used for more than 20 years to have a lower environmental impact than a natural tree.

Natural trees are usually grown locally or regionally, reducing the distance and emissions involved in their transportation. However, some natural trees may still travel long distances, depending on the availability and demand of different species and sizes. For example, a Fraser fir tree grown in North Carolina may be shipped to California, while a Noble fir tree grown in Oregon may be shipped to Florida. According to the National Christmas Tree Association, the average distance traveled by a natural tree in the US is about 750 miles.

Lifespan

Artificial trees can last for many years, depending on the quality and care of the product. Some consumers may choose to buy an artificial tree to save money and hassle, as they do not have to buy a new tree every year, or deal with the shedding of needles, the watering of the tree, or the disposal of the tree. However, artificial trees can also lose their shape, color, and functionality over time, due to wear and tear, damage, or changing trends. According to a survey by Nielsen, the average lifespan of an artificial tree in the US is about six years.

Natural trees, by contrast, can only last for a few weeks, depending on the freshness and care of the product. Some consumers may prefer to buy a natural tree to enjoy the scent, the tradition, and the experience of choosing and decorating a real tree. However, natural trees also require more maintenance, such as regular watering, trimming, and cleaning. And once the holiday season is over, natural trees have to be disposed of, which can pose a challenge for some consumers. According to the same survey, the average lifespan of a natural tree in the US is about 32 days.

Disposal

Artificial trees are difficult to recycle, as they are made of mixed materials that are hard to separate and process. Most recycling facilities do not accept artificial trees, and most consumers do not know how or where to recycle them. As a result, most artificial trees end up in landfills, where they can take hundreds of years to decompose, releasing methane and other pollutants into the atmosphere. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, about 10 million artificial trees are thrown away every year in the US, adding to the country’s waste problem.

Natural trees, on the other hand, are easy to recycle, as they are made of organic materials that can be composted or mulched. Many communities offer curbside pickup or drop-off locations for natural trees, where they are collected and processed into useful products such as soil, fertilizer, or mulch. Some natural trees can also be donated or reused for other purposes, such as wildlife habitat, erosion control, or firewood. According to the National Christmas Tree Association, about 93% of natural trees are recycled every year in the US, reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills.

Tips

So, which kind of tree should you choose? The answer depends on your personal preferences and circumstances, such as your budget, your space, your style, and your values. There is no clear-cut answer, as both options have advantages and disadvantages. However, here are some tips on how to make the most sustainable decision, regardless of which type of tree you choose.

  • If you choose an artificial tree, buy a high-quality one that will last for many years, and take good care of it. Avoid buying cheap or trendy ones that will break or go out of fashion soon. When you are ready to replace your artificial tree, try to sell it, donate it, or recycle it, instead of throwing it away.   • If you choose a natural tree, buy a local, organic, and potted one, if possible. Avoid buying imported, conventional, or cut ones, as they have a higher environmental impact. When you are done with your natural tree, recycle it, donate it, or reuse it, instead of throwing it away.   • Whichever type of tree you choose, decorate it with energy-efficient and durable ornaments, such as LED lights, wooden or metal ornaments, or homemade crafts. Avoid using disposable or plastic ornaments, such as tinsel, glitter, or foam. When you are not using your tree, turn off the lights and unplug the cords, to save energy and prevent fire hazards.

Choosing a Christmas tree is a personal and festive decision, but it is also an environmental one. Both natural and artificial trees have pros and cons, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. However, by considering the factors and tips mentioned above, you can make a more informed and responsible choice, and enjoy a greener and happier holiday season.
