Her parents, Joylette Roberta and Joshua McKinley Coleman, recognized her potential and supported her pursuit of knowledge.

NASA and Orbital Mechanics

During her 33-year career at NASA and its predecessor, Johnson mastered complex manual calculations. She played a pivotal role in America’s first human spaceflight, calculating trajectories for astronaut Alan Shepard’s historic 1961 mission. When digital computers were still untested, Johnson meticulously verified the math for John Glenn’s orbital spaceflight in 1962. Her contributions extended to the Apollo Lunar Module and command module, ensuring successful rendezvous paths for moon missions.
