The Golden Globe Awards, one of the most anticipated events in the film industry, has announced its nominees for the 81st edition of the ceremony. The nominations were announced by comedians Cedric Antonio Kyles and Wilmer Valderrama at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where the ceremony will take place on 7 January 2024.
The most nominated film is Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, a satirical comedy based on the iconic doll. The film stars Margot Robbie as Barbie, who leaves her perfect world to explore the real world. The film received nine nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actress for Robbie.
The second most nominated film is Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, a historical drama about the development of the atomic bomb. The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who led the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey Jr. as Henry L. Stimson, the Secretary of War who authorised the use of the bomb. The film received eight nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actor for Murphy.
Other films with multiple nominations include Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, a remake of the classic musical, with seven nominations; Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, a sci-fi epic based on the novel by Frank Herbert, with six nominations; and Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, a western drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst, with five nominations.
The Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast live on NBC on 7 January 2024 at 8pm ET. The host of the ceremony has not yet been announced, but rumours suggest it could be Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who have hosted the show three times. The ceremony will also honour Tom Hanks with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for his outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.
