Curtain bangs are back in fashion, and for good reasons. This versatile and flattering fringe style can suit any face shape, hair type, and personality. Whether you want to add some softness to your look, frame your features, or change up your hairstyle without losing length, curtain bangs are a great option. But how do you cut, style, and maintain them? Here are some tips and tricks from the experts to help you rock the curtain bangs trend in 2024.

What are curtain bangs?

Curtain bangs are long, wispy bangs that part in the middle and sweep to the sides, creating a curtain-like effect around the face. They are also known as Bardot bangs, after the iconic French actress Brigitte Bardot, who popularised them in the 1960s.  Curtain bangs can vary in length, thickness, and angle, depending on your preference and hair texture. They can also be easily styled in different ways, such as straight, wavy, curly, or pinned back.

How to cut curtain bangs at home?

If you are feeling adventurous and want to cut your own curtain bangs at home, you will need a pair of hair trimming shears, a flat comb, and a picture of your desired bangs for reference.  Here are the steps to follow:

  • Detangle and dry your hair before you cut. Curtain bangs are easier to cut when hair is dry, as you can see the natural shape and movement of your hair.
  • Make a center part and section out your hair. Use the comb to draw a straight part down the middle of your head, from the forehead to the crown. Then, use the comb to draw two diagonal parts from the crown to the arch of your eyebrows, forming a triangle of hair at the front. This will be the section you will cut for your bangs. Clip the rest of your hair back to keep it out of the way.
  • Cut your bangs gradually and carefully. Start by combing your bangs forward and holding them between your index and middle fingers, about an inch below your eyebrows. Cut the hair below your fingers in a straight line, using small and quick snips. This will be the shortest point of your bangs. Then, angle your fingers slightly downwards and cut the hair on the sides of your bangs, following the diagonal parts. This will create a longer and softer edge for your bangs.
  • Check and refine your bangs. Release your hair from the clips and comb your bangs to the sides, parting them in the middle. Check the length, shape, and balance of your bangs, and trim any uneven or stray hairs. You can also use thinning shears or a razor to add some texture and movement to your bangs, if you like.

How to style curtain bangs?

Curtain bangs are easy to style, as they can adapt to different hair textures and looks. Here are some ideas to try:

  • For a sleek and smooth look, use a round brush and a blow dryer to dry your bangs forward, then to the sides. You can also use a flat iron to straighten your bangs and add some shine.
  • For a wavy and tousled look, use a curling iron or a flat iron to create some loose waves on your bangs, then use your fingers to tousle them. You can also use some texturizing spray or dry shampoo to add some volume and definition.
  • For a curly and bouncy look, use a diffuser attachment on your blow dryer to dry your bangs, scrunching them with your hands. You can also use some curl-enhancing cream or gel to define and hold your curls.
  • For a pinned-back and elegant look, use some bobby pins or clips to secure your bangs to the sides or back of your head. You can also use some hairspray or gel to smooth any flyaways and keep your bangs in place.

How to maintain curtain bangs?

Curtain bangs are low-maintenance, as they grow out nicely and blend with the rest of your hair. However, you may still want to trim them every few weeks to keep them fresh and healthy. You can either do it yourself, following the same steps as above, or visit a professional hairstylist for a touch-up.  You may also want to wash your bangs more often than the rest of your hair, as they can get oily or greasy faster. You can use a gentle shampoo and conditioner, or a dry shampoo, to keep your bangs clean and fresh.

Curtain bangs are a fun and flattering way to update your hairstyle and express your personality. They are also easy to cut, style, and maintain, making them a perfect choice for anyone who wants to try something new.
