The Bauhaus was a school. It operated for fourteen years, from 1919 to 1933, in three German cities: Weimar, Dessau and Berlin. It had fewer than 1,400 students in total. Yet its influence on design, architecture, art education and the visual culture of modern life is so pervasive that it has become almost invisible. You encounter its principles every time you pick up a smartphone, sit in a chair described as minimalist, or walk past a building with clean lines and large windows. The Bauhaus did not invent modernism, but it gave modernism a pedagogy, a set of rules and a global reach.
Understanding what the Bauhaus actually was, as opposed to what it has been mythologised into, requires separating the school from its afterlife. The popular image tends toward white walls, primary colours and geometric abstraction. The reality was messier, more argumentative and more interesting. The Bauhaus was a site of constant debate about the relationship between art, craft and industry, about whether beauty could be standardised, and about the social obligations of design.
Walter Gropius and the Founding Idea
Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1919, merging the Weimar Academy of Fine Art with the School of Arts and Crafts. His founding manifesto called for a new unity of all the arts under the roof of architecture. The animating ideal was a Gesamtkunstwerk, or total work of art, in which painting, sculpture, furniture, typography and building would form a single coherent environment.
Gropius was an architect, but the school initially had no architecture department. This was deliberate. Gropius believed that architects needed to understand materials, processes and the visual arts before they could design buildings. The first Bauhaus curriculum required all students to pass through a Vorkurs, a preliminary course designed to strip away inherited habits and teach the fundamentals of colour, form and material. Johannes Itten, and later László Moholy-Nagy and Josef Albers, taught this course.
The Vorkurs was the Bauhaus’s most distinctive educational innovation. It treated design as something that could be taught through systematic experimentation rather than through the imitation of historical styles. Students worked with raw materials, explored the properties of colour through interaction, and learned to see form as something produced by the relationship between elements rather than by the application of ornament.
The Teachers – Kandinsky, Klee, Moholy-Nagy and Albers
The Bauhaus faculty read like a directory of twentieth-century visual culture. Wassily Kandinsky taught colour theory. Paul Klee taught form and colour. László Moholy-Nagy ran the metal workshop and was the school’s leading advocate for photography and the new typography. Josef Albers taught glass workshop and later the preliminary course. Herbert Bayer headed the workshop for printing and advertising. Marcel Breuer ran the furniture workshop.
Each of these figures brought a distinct set of concerns. Kandinsky was interested in the spiritual properties of colour and form, drawing on his background in Russian abstraction. Klee approached art-making as a process of organic growth, treating each work as something that evolved rather than something that was planned. Moholy-Nagy was the school’s most ardent technophile, convinced that photography and the machine could be tools for artistic liberation rather than alienation. Albers was rigorous and empirical, insisting that students learn through direct physical engagement with materials.
The strength of the Bauhaus lay not in a single doctrine but in the productive tensions between these positions. The school was a place where Kandinsky’s mysticism and Moholy-Nagy’s machine optimism existed in the same corridor, arguing about the same problems. This diversity of approach is what prevented the Bauhaus from becoming a style. It was a method, not an aesthetic.
The Dessau Years – Design Meets Industry
When the school moved to Dessau in 1925, it entered its most productive phase. Gropius designed the new campus building, which became one of the defining works of modernist architecture. Its glass curtain walls, flat roof and open floor plan expressed the school’s principles in built form. The building was a manifesto in concrete and steel.
In Dessau, the Bauhaus established formal workshops for furniture, textiles, metalwork, typography and advertising. These workshops produced objects for sale, establishing a direct link between the school and industry. Marianne Brandt’s MT 49 tea infuser, designed in the metal workshop in 1924, is a canonical example of that ambition: a form reduced to geometric essentials, executed in silvered metal and ebony, and conceived as a prototype for industrial production.
Herbert Bayer’s work in typography and advertising during the Dessau period was equally influential. He developed a universal typeface using only lowercase letters, arguing that the capital letter was an unnecessary complication. He designed posters and publications that used asymmetric layouts, sans-serif type and photographic imagery, creating a visual language that still dominates graphic design.
The weaving workshop, led by Gunta Stölzl, the only woman to become a Bauhaus master, produced fabrics that were both aesthetically radical and commercially viable, and it grew into the school’s most financially successful workshop. Stölzl’s weave patterns used abstract geometries that anticipated the textile designs of the mid-century modern period. An earlier attempt to reconcile handcraft with industry, the pottery workshop at Dornburg under Gerhard Marcks, had belonged to the Weimar years and was not re-established when the school moved to Dessau in 1925.
The Emigres – Bauhaus Goes to Britain and America
The Nazis closed the Bauhaus in 1933, denouncing it as degenerate and Bolshevist. But the school’s ideas did not die. They migrated with its teachers, who scattered across the world. The most significant destinations were Britain and the United States, and the Bauhaus refugees fundamentally reshaped design education and practice.
In Britain, the most important conduit was Gropius himself, who fled Nazi Germany for London in 1934 and formed an architectural partnership with the English modernist Maxwell Fry. Gropius lived in the Isokon Flats in Hampstead, the pioneering modernist apartment block designed by the Canadian-born architect Wells Coates, and served as controller of design for the Isokon furniture company before leaving for Harvard in 1937. Other Bauhaus figures moved through the same Hampstead circle: Marcel Breuer, who designed celebrated bent-plywood furniture for Isokon, including the Long Chair, in partnership with the architect F. R. S. Yorke; and Moholy-Nagy, who spent two years in London before moving to Chicago.
The British design establishment received the Bauhaus refugees with a mixture of admiration and suspicion. The Design Council’s predecessor organisations, including the Council of Industrial Design established in 1944, absorbed Bauhaus ideas about the unity of art and industry but often stripped them of their social radicalism. The Bauhaus emphasis on standardisation and mass production aligned with post-war reconstruction needs, but its utopian dimensions were frequently softened into a middle-brow modernism.
In America, the impact was more direct and more lasting. Moholy-Nagy founded the New Bauhaus in Chicago in 1937, which later became the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Albers taught at Black Mountain College from 1933 to 1949, where his colour and materials courses influenced a generation of American artists including Robert Rauschenberg and Ruth Asawa. Bayer settled in New York and worked extensively in corporate design, bringing Bauhaus principles to American advertising and exhibition design.
The most consequential American legacy was the influence on corporate modernism. The Bauhaus idea that good design could communicate efficiency and progress was eagerly adopted by American corporations in the post-war period. The International Style in architecture, which dominated corporate building from the 1950s onward, owed a direct debt to the Bauhaus, even as it often simplified the school’s more complex arguments about the social role of architecture.
The Principles That Persist
Several Bauhaus principles remain embedded in contemporary design practice, often without attribution. The first is the idea that form follows function, that the shape of an object should derive from its use rather than from applied decoration. This principle, which Gropius inherited from Louis Sullivan and the Chicago School, is now so widespread as to be almost a cliché, but it was the Bauhaus that systematised it and made it teachable.
The second is the integration of art and technology. Moholy-Nagy argued that the artist should not resist the machine but should learn to use it as a creative tool. This idea underpins contemporary digital design, where the boundary between creative expression and technical production has largely dissolved.
The third is the primacy of the preliminary course, the idea that design education should begin with fundamentals rather than with specialisation. This approach now structures art and design education worldwide, from foundation courses in British art schools to the first-year curriculum at design programmes from the Royal College of Art to the Rhode Island School of Design.
The fourth is the idea that design has social obligations. The Bauhaus was not merely an aesthetic project. Gropius and his colleagues believed that good design could improve living conditions, that well-designed housing, furniture and everyday objects could contribute to a more equitable society. This social dimension has been diluted in many contemporary applications of Bauhaus ideas, but it remains present in movements such as social design and design for sustainability.
Your Phone and the Bauhaus Legacy
The most visible Bauhaus legacy in contemporary life is probably the smartphone. The device’s design embodies multiple Bauhaus principles: functionalism (every element serves a purpose), reduction (forms pared to geometric essentials), the integration of art and technology (the interface as aesthetic object), and the idea that the best design is the design that disappears.
Dieter Rams, whose work at Braun in the 1960s and 1970s directly influenced Apple’s design language, absorbed the functionalist tradition of the Bauhaus at second hand: at Braun he collaborated closely with designers from the Ulm School of Design, the post-war German school whose first rector, Max Bill, had himself been a Bauhaus student. The lineage of ideas runs from Gropius and Moholy-Nagy, through Bill and Ulm, to Rams, and from Rams to Jony Ive. The clean lines, the emphasis on material honesty, the removal of unnecessary detail, the belief that a product should be intuitive to use, all of these are Bauhaus ideas carried forward through successive generations of designers.
When Jony Ive described his design philosophy in terms of honesty, simplicity and the elimination of the unnecessary, he was articulating principles that Gropius and Moholy-Nagy had developed at the Bauhaus nearly a century earlier. The difference is that what was radical in Weimar in 1923 is now simply the default in consumer product design. The Bauhaus won so completely that its victory is now invisible.
