In the highlands of Bolivia, on a hilltop known to local farmers but never explored by researchers, an ancient temple has emerged from the earth – and with it, new answers to one of South America’s most enduring archaeological mysteries. The Tiwanaku civilization, which flourished near the southern shores of Lake Titicaca for over a thousand years before collapsing mysteriously around AD 1000, left behind stone monoliths, ceramic vessels, and enigmatic ruins. But the newly discovered Palaspata temple, located 130 miles southeast of Tiwanaku’s established site, offers something unprecedented: a physical connection between the civilization’s heartland and its distant territories, revealing the strategic infrastructure that sustained one of the Andes’ most powerful states.
The discovery, published in June 2025 in the journal Antiquity, was led by José Capriles, a Bolivian archaeologist and associate professor of anthropology at Pennsylvania State University, in collaboration with Bolivian institutions. It reshapes our understanding of how the Tiwanaku state expanded, controlled trade, and projected power across a landscape of extraordinary geographic diversity.
The Enigma of Tiwanaku
To understand the significance of Palaspata, one must first grasp the scale and ambition of Tiwanaku itself. The civilization emerged around 500 AD near Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, at an altitude of over 3,800 metres. Over the following centuries, it grew into one of the most complex societies in pre-Columbian South America, with a population estimated at tens of thousands, monumental architecture, sophisticated agricultural systems, and a far-reaching trade network that extended across the Andes.
Tiwanaku is widely regarded as a precursor to the Inca Empire. Its influence spread across modern-day Bolivia, Peru, Chile, and Argentina. Its stone monoliths – the Ponce Stela, the Bennett Monolith, the Gateway of the Sun – testify to a culture that invested heavily in monumental art and architecture. Its agricultural systems, including raised fields and irrigation canals, enabled intensive cultivation at altitudes that would defeat less ingenious societies.
Yet the civilization’s decline was dramatic and poorly understood. Around AD 1000, the population contracted, the monumental construction ceased, and the political structure fragmented. Theories range from environmental degradation and prolonged drought to social upheaval and internal conflict. The most widespread hypothesis, supported by evidence of sacrificed women whose bones suggest desperation for rain, is that a prolonged drought triggered agricultural collapse and political disintegration.
What has been missing from this picture is the physical evidence of how Tiwanaku maintained its influence across such a vast territory. Palaspata fills that gap.
The Discovery
The site was known to local farmers in the municipality of Caracollo, who had long noted the unusual stone alignments on the hilltop. But it had never been explored in depth by researchers because of its unassuming location – off the main tourist routes, in a landscape dominated by more famous ruins.
Capriles and his team noticed an unmapped plot of land in satellite imagery and investigated further on foot and with drones. What they found was a rectangular ceremonial complex approximately 125 metres long by 145 metres wide – roughly the size of a city block. Stone alignments revealed an ancient temple, which the researchers named Palaspata after the native name for the area.
The temple complex consists of 15 quadrangular enclosures arranged around a rectangular inner courtyard. Its main entrance faces west, aligned with the solar equinox – a layout consistent with Tiwanaku religious architecture, which typically aligned structures with key events in the solar cycle. The building’s modular design and integrated sunken courtyard strongly resemble Tiwanaku terraced platform temples found near Lake Titicaca, suggesting that the same architectural principles were applied at this distant outpost.
Using drone data and 3D rendering, the research team created a digital reconstruction of what the temple might have looked like: a substantial stone structure with terraced levels, a central courtyard, and ceremonial spaces oriented toward the rising and setting sun.
The Strategic Location
The location of Palaspata is not accidental. The temple sits at the intersection of three vastly different ecosystems: the highlands around Lake Titicaca to the north, the arid Altiplano to the west, and the Andean valleys of Cochabamba to the east. This convergence of ecological zones made the site a natural nexus for trade – a point where highland products (llama wool, dried meat, quinoa) met lowland goods (maize, coca, tropical fruits).
“The site was strategically positioned to directly control inter-regional traffic and trade between the highlands and the eastern valleys of Cochabamba,” the researchers concluded. In this sense, Palaspata was not merely a temple but a gateway – a node in a network of political and economic control that extended Tiwanaku’s reach across the Andes.
The surface of the temple contained numerous fragments of keru cups – the traditional vessels used for drinking chicha, a fermented maize beer. The presence of these cups at a highland site is significant because maize was not locally grown. It was cultivated in the Cochabamba valleys, over 200 kilometres to the east. The cups thus provide material evidence of long-distance trade and the social rituals – feasts, celebrations, political gatherings – that accompanied it.
The Temple as Infrastructure
What makes Palaspata distinctive is not merely its age or its architecture but its function. The researchers argue that the complex represents “substantial state investment” – a deliberately constructed facility designed to project Tiwanaku’s power and facilitate its control over distant trade routes.
This is a different model of expansion than the one typically associated with pre-Inca states. Rather than conquering territory through military force, Tiwanaku appears to have used infrastructure – temples, roads, trade facilities – as instruments of political influence. The temple at Palaspata served simultaneously as a religious centre, a trade hub, and a symbol of state authority. Local elites may have been involved in its construction and operation, profiting from the circulation of goods while reinforcing their allegiance to the Tiwanaku state.
“The investment in infrastructure was also a strategically planned decision from a macroregional polity such as Tiwanaku, which ultimately required such an infrastructural investment to consolidate its geopolitical hegemony,” the researchers wrote. It is a model of empire-building through architecture rather than warfare – and one that offers insights into how pre-Columbian states managed diversity and distance.
What Remains Unknown
The discovery of Palaspata raises as many questions as it answers. When exactly was the temple built? How does it compare to other terraced platform temples in the Tiwanaku heartland? How was it used, and by whom? Did it serve primarily as a religious site, a trading post, or a political facility – or some combination of all three?
Further fieldwork, dating, and analysis of materials from the building itself will help answer these questions. The keru cups, the ceramic fragments, and the architectural details will provide evidence of construction dates, usage patterns, and cultural connections. Additional research at the site will also help resolve questions about alternative models of Tiwanaku political strategy – whether the expansion was primarily coercive, collaborative, or some hybrid of both.
What is already clear is that the Tiwanaku state was more organised, more ambitious, and more physically connected across its territory than previously understood. Palaspata is not an isolated outpost but evidence of a planned, strategic infrastructure that extended state power to the furthest edges of its influence.
The Broader Context
The discovery also sheds light on the broader dynamics of pre-Columbian civilisation in the Andes. Tiwanaku was not the only state that expanded during the first millennium AD, and the model of infrastructure-based expansion may apply to other societies in the region. The Moche on the northern coast of Peru, the Wari in the central highlands, and the Nazca in the south all developed sophisticated systems of trade, agriculture, and political control. Palaspata adds a new dimension to this comparative picture, suggesting that the Andes were home to a diversity of state-building strategies.
The site also offers scientific opportunities that extend beyond archaeology. The landscape around Palaspata has remained largely unchanged since Tiwanaku times, providing a baseline for studying long-term environmental change. Research into ancient agricultural practices, soil composition, and climate patterns could yield insights into how the Andes have changed over the past millennium – and how they might change in the future.
A Window into the Past
With more insight into the past of this ancient site, we get a window into how people managed cooperation, and how we can materially see evidence of political and economic control, Capriles has said. It is a statement that applies not only to Tiwanaku but to all societies that have attempted to project power across distance and diversity.
The temple at Palaspata is a reminder that the ruins we see are only a fraction of what exists. Less than 10 percent of Tiwanaku’s known sites have been excavated. The highlands of Bolivia, Peru, and Chile contain untold numbers of buried structures, artefacts, and landscapes that have yet to be revealed. Each discovery, like Palaspata, adds a piece to a puzzle that is still being assembled.
The lost temple on the hilltop is no longer lost. What it reveals about the civilization that built it is only beginning to be understood.
