The BAFTAs, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards, are one of the most prestigious and glamorous events in the film industry. They are also a royal affair, as Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, has been the president of the organization since 2010. However, this year, the prince had to attend the ceremony alone, as his wife, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, was absent due to a health issue.

Kate’s Health Scare

Kate Middleton, who is known for her impeccable style and grace, has been a regular fixture at the BAFTAs, accompanying her husband and dazzling the crowds with her stunning outfits. However, this year, she had to skip the event, as she was recovering from an abdominal surgery that she underwent earlier this month.

According to a palace source, Kate had been suffering from severe abdominal pain for a while, and after consulting with her doctors, she decided to have a laparoscopy, a minimally invasive procedure that involves inserting a small camera through a tiny incision in the abdomen to examine the organs and tissues. The source said that the surgery was successful and that Kate was resting at home, following the medical advice.

The source also said that Kate was disappointed to miss the BAFTAs, as she loves the film industry and supports her husband’s role as the president of BAFTA. However, she also understood that her health was the priority and that she needed to take some time off to recover.

William’s Solo Appearance

Prince William, who is second in line to the throne, arrived at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where the BAFTAs were held, on Sunday, February 18, 2024. He was greeted by cheers and applause from the fans and the media, who had gathered outside the venue. He smiled and waved, but also looked a bit nervous and sad, as he walked the red carpet without his wife by his side.

The prince, who wore a black tuxedo and a bow tie, met with the BAFTA officials and the host of the ceremony, Graham Norton, a popular comedian and TV presenter. He apologized for Kate’s absence and said that she was doing well and that she sent her best wishes to everyone. He also said that he was looking forward to the show and that he was proud to be the president of BAFTA.

During the ceremony, Prince William presented the BAFTA Fellowship, the highest honour of the organization, to Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm and the producer of the Star Wars franchise. He praised her for her remarkable achievements and contributions to the film industry, and said that she was an inspiration to many. He also delivered a speech on the importance of diversity and inclusion in the film industry, and said that BAFTA was committed to promoting and supporting talent from all backgrounds and cultures.

The Reaction of the Public

The public, who watched the BAFTAs on TV or online, expressed their sympathy and support for Kate and William, and wished them well. Many also commented on how brave and professional William was, and how he handled the situation with dignity and grace. Some also praised him for his speech and his presentation, and said that he was a great representative of the royal family and the film industry.

However, some also criticized him for not watching some of the nominated films, such as Barbie, a live-action adaptation of the iconic doll, starring Margot Robbie. William admitted that he had not seen the film yet, and said that he hoped to catch up soon. Some fans found this amusing and forgivable, while others found it disrespectful and unacceptable.

The BAFTAs were a night of celebration, recognition, and entertainment, but also a night of challenge, change, and opportunity. The film industry, like the royal family, is facing its own issues and transformations, and both are trying to adapt and evolve with the times. Perhaps, next year, Kate and William will be able to attend the event together, and enjoy the magic of the movies as a couple.
