The 83rd Venice International Film Festival runs from 2 to 12 September on the Lido, and for anyone who follows cinema seriously it marks the moment the year changes gear. Summer belongs to the blockbuster. From Venice onward, the films arriving in cinemas are the ones built to be argued about, and a good number of them will still be in the conversation when awards season closes months later.
A jury led by a filmmaker who acts
Maggie Gyllenhaal presides over the seven-member international jury that will award the Golden Lion for Best Film, the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize and the Coppa Volpi acting honours. The choice is a pointed one. Gyllenhaal spent decades as an actor before directing, and her own films have shown a taste for difficult interior work rather than obvious prestige. Juries take on the temperament of their president more than the ceremony admits, and this one is unlikely to reward the safest film in the competition.
Why Venice, and not the others
Venice has quietly become the most consequential festival on the calendar, overtaking rivals as the launchpad for films that go the distance. Its timing helps, sitting early enough to set the terms of the autumn conversation. So does its willingness to give a competition slot to a auteur working at scale alongside a first feature from somewhere with no film industry to speak of. The Lido is a small place, and that compression is part of the effect. Everyone sees the same films within a few days and forms opinions in public.
What is at stake beyond the prizes
For the industry, Venice is a marketplace and a temperature check. For audiences, it is the first real signal about which films of the coming year deserve attention, and which reputations are about to shift. A Golden Lion does not guarantee anything, but it reliably sends a film travelling, into festivals and cinemas that would otherwise never have booked it.
The competition lineup was announced in late July, and the eleven days that follow will be picked apart frame by frame. By 12 September, when the Golden Lion is handed over, the shape of the film year will be visible. Everything after that is confirmation or upset.
