The UK culture scene was buzzing with excitement and activity on February 14th and 15th, 2024, as various events and stories made headlines and captured the attention of the public. From art and literature, to music and theatre, to film and TV, there was something for everyone to enjoy and appreciate. Here are some of the highlights of the UK culture news on those two days.
A London Mural by a Postwar Artist Faces Demolition
A mural by a key postwar artist, John Piper, is under threat of demolition, as the building where it is located is set to be redeveloped. The mural, titled The History of the River Thames, is a 60-foot-long mosaic that depicts the landmarks and events along the river, from the prehistoric era to the modern day. It was commissioned in 1961 by the Shell Centre, a complex of offices and shops on the South Bank, and was installed in the lobby of one of the buildings.
The mural is considered to be one of Piper’s most important works, and a rare example of public art from the postwar period. Piper was a versatile and influential artist, who worked in various media, such as painting, printmaking, stained glass, and ceramics. He was also a prominent figure in the British art scene, and was involved in projects such as the Festival of Britain, the Coventry Cathedral, and the Tate Gallery.
However, the mural is now at risk of being destroyed, as the building where it is located is planned to be demolished and replaced by a new development, called the Southbank Place. The developers, Canary Wharf Group and Qatari Diar, have not made any commitment to preserve or relocate the mural, despite the appeals and protests from various groups and individuals, such as the Twentieth Century Society, the John Piper Estate, and the London mayor Sadiq Khan.
The fate of the mural is still uncertain, as the developers have not yet obtained the necessary permissions and approvals for their project. The supporters of the mural hope that the mural can be saved and given a new home, where it can be appreciated and admired by the public.
The BAFTA Film Awards Announce Their Winners
The BAFTA Film Awards, the British equivalent of the Oscars, announced their winners on February 15th, 2024, in a ceremony that was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The awards celebrated the best of British and international cinema, and recognised the achievements and talents of the filmmakers and actors. The ceremony was hosted by Graham Norton, a comedian and TV presenter, and featured various presenters and performers, such as Olivia Colman, Daniel Kaluuya, Billie Eilish, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
The big winner of the night was Nomadland, a drama film that follows a woman who lives as a nomad in the American West, after losing everything in the Great Recession. The film won four awards, including Best Film, Best Director for Chloe Zhao, Best Actress for Frances McDormand, and Best Cinematography for Joshua James Richards. The film also made history, as Zhao became the first woman of colour and the second woman ever to win the BAFTA for Best Director.
Other notable winners included Promising Young Woman, a dark comedy thriller that tackles the issue of sexual assault, which won two awards, including Best British Film and Best Original Screenplay for Emerald Fennell; The Father, a drama film that depicts the effects of dementia, which won two awards, including Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins and Best Adapted Screenplay for Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton; and Soul, an animated film that explores the meaning of life, which won two awards, including Best Animated Film and Best Original Score for Jon Batiste, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
The BAFTA Film Awards also honoured the achievements and contributions of some of the legends of the film industry, such as Ang Lee, who received the BAFTA Fellowship, the highest honour of the academy; and Chadwick Boseman, who received a posthumous tribute for his inspiring and influential career.
The BAFTA Film Awards were a celebration of the diversity and excellence of the film industry, and a showcase of the stories and performances that moved and entertained the audiences in the past year.
A New Book Reveals The Secrets of The Royal Family
A new book by a royal biographer, Andrew Morton, has revealed some of the secrets and scandals of the royal family, based on interviews with insiders and sources. The book, titled The Crown: The Inside Story, is a companion to the Netflix series The Crown, which dramatises the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The book covers the events and episodes of the fourth season of the series, which spans from 1977 to 1990, and features some of the most controversial and turbulent moments of the royal history, such as the marriage and divorce of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, the assassination of Lord Mountbatten, the Falklands War, and the rise and fall of Margaret Thatcher.
The book claims to reveal some of the behind-the-scenes details and facts that the series did not show or changed for dramatic purposes, such as the true nature and extent of the affair between Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles, the secret meetings and conversations between the Queen and Thatcher, the personal struggles and tragedies of Princess Anne, and the involvement and influence of the Queen Mother and Prince Philip in the affairs of the state and the family.
The book also offers some insights and opinions on the current and future state of the monarchy, such as the impact and legacy of Princess Diana, the role and popularity of Prince William and Kate Middleton, the challenges and controversies faced by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and the succession and plans of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles.
