The Handmaid’s Tale, the acclaimed adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel, is coming to an end with its sixth and final season. The show, which has won multiple awards and garnered critical praise, has been a gripping and disturbing portrayal of life in Gilead, a totalitarian regime that has enslaved women and stripped them of their rights and dignity. The show has also been a powerful commentary on the current political and social issues, such as women’s rights, religious extremism, and environmental crisis.

The fifth season, which aired in 2022, left us with a cliffhanger, as June, the rebellious handmaid who has been fighting for her freedom and her daughter, managed to escape to Hawaii with the help of Nick, her lover and the father of her second child. However, her husband Luke was captured by the Gilead forces, and her fate remains uncertain. Meanwhile, the resistance movement against Gilead is growing stronger, as more people join the cause and expose the atrocities of the regime.

But what can we expect from the sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale? When will it be released, who will be in it, and how will it end? Here is everything you need to know about The Handmaid’s Tale season 6.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Release Date: When Will It Air?

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 has been delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA writers’ strike, which affected the production of many shows and movies. The strike, which lasted for several months, was resolved in February 2024, but the show still had to reschedule its filming plans. According to Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich, who oversees content for Hulu Originals, the show is set to start production in summer 2024, and premiere in 2025. However, he did not specify an exact date or month for the release.

The previous seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale have been released in different times of the year, ranging from April to June. The fifth season was released in June 2022, after being delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, it is possible that the sixth season will follow a similar pattern and be released in mid-2025. However, this is only speculation, and we will have to wait for an official announcement from Hulu or Channel 4, the UK broadcaster of the show.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Cast: Who Will Be Back?

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 will see the return of most of the main cast members, who have been praised for their stellar performances throughout the show. Elisabeth Moss, who plays June, will reprise her role as the protagonist and the narrator of the show. She will also serve as an executive producer and a director for some episodes, as she did in the previous seasons. Moss has won two Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards for her portrayal of June, and has been widely recognised as one of the best actors of her generation.

Other cast members who will be back include:

  • Max Minghella as Nick, June’s lover and a commander in Gilead
  • Yvonne Strahovski as Serena, the wife of Fred Waterford, a high-ranking official in Gilead
  • Joseph Fiennes as Fred, who was captured by the Canadian authorities and put on trial for his crimes
  • Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia, the ruthless overseer of the handmaids
  • O-T Fagbenle as Luke, June’s husband who was separated from her and fled to Canada
  • Samira Wiley as Moira, June’s best friend who escaped from Gilead and became a refugee activist
  • Alexis Bledel as Emily, a former handmaid who also escaped from Gilead and reunited with her wife and son
  • Bradley Whitford as Commander Lawrence, a powerful and influential leader in Gilead who helped June and other handmaids
  • Madeline Brewer as Janine, a loyal and resilient handmaid who survived many ordeals
  • Amanda Brugel as Rita, a former Martha who testified against the Waterfords and became a friend of June
  • Sam Jaeger as Mark Tuello, an American agent who worked with June and the resistance
  • Mckenna Grace as Mrs. Keyes, a young and rebellious wife who sheltered June and other handmaids

However, there will be one major change in the cast, as Alexis Bledel, who plays Emily, has decided to leave the show. Bledel, who won an Emmy Award for her role, said that she felt she had to step away from the show at this time, and thanked the creator, the cast, and the crew for their support. Her character, Emily, has returned to Gilead, and her fate is unknown.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Plot: What Will Happen?

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 will pick up from where the fifth season left off, and will conclude the story of June and her struggle against Gilead. The showrunner, Bruce Miller, has said that the sixth season will be the final one, and that he has a clear vision of how he wants to end the show. He has also said that he wants to stay faithful to the spirit of Margaret Atwood’s novel, and that he has consulted with her about the ending.

The main questions that the sixth season will have to answer are:

  • What will happen to June, now that she has escaped to Hawaii with Nick and Nichole? Will she be able to reunite with her daughter Hannah, who is still in Gilead? Will she be able to live a normal life, or will she continue to fight for the liberation of Gilead?
  • What will happen to Luke, who was captured by the Gilead forces while trying to help June and Nichole? Will he be tortured, killed, or exchanged for someone else? Will he ever see June again, and how will he react to her relationship with Nick?
  • What will happen to the Waterfords, who are facing trial for their crimes in Canada? Will they be convicted, or will they find a way to escape or manipulate the system? Will Serena, who is pregnant with Fred’s child, betray him or stand by him?
  • What will happen to Aunt Lydia, who is losing control over the handmaids and facing opposition from Commander Lawrence and other leaders? Will she be able to maintain her power and authority, or will she be overthrown or killed?
  • What will happen to the resistance movement, which is growing stronger and more organised, with the help of June, Nick, Tuello, and others? Will they be able to overthrow Gilead, or will they face more challenges and setbacks?
  • What will happen to the other characters, such as Moira, Emily, Rita, Janine, and Mrs. Keyes, who have their own stories and struggles? Will they find happiness, peace, or justice, or will they suffer more losses and tragedies?

The sixth season will also explore the themes of trauma, healing, forgiveness, and redemption, as the characters deal with the consequences of their actions and choices, and try to find their place in a changing world. The show will also address the current issues of our time, such as the climate crisis, the refugee crisis, the rise of authoritarianism, and the fight for human rights.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 will be the final and most epic chapter of the show, and will hopefully provide a satisfying and meaningful conclusion to the story of June and her fellow handmaids. We can’t wait to see how it all ends.
