Paris Fashion Week for spring/summer 2027 ran from 28 September to 6 October 2026, closing fashion month with 68 runway shows and 33 presentations on the provisional calendar (Vogue, July 2026; FHCM final calendar may differ – see note on provisional vs final calendars below). Its most discussed casting decision took about thirty seconds of walking time: Olivia Colman, 52, making her runway debut for Miu Miu on 4 October, wearing her natural grey hair in a messy ponytail with a black leather skirt suit (footwear reported as mules by Lenta, loafers by PEOPLE – see below).
The moment travelled fast – Lenta.ru covered it the same week, on 7 October (Alina Gosteva, rubric Style/Personalities): the Oscar-winning English actress with grey hair on the runway in Paris (Lenta headline, translated) – because it compressed several live arguments about age, casting and what a fashion show is for into a single image.
What actually happened
The facts are well documented. Colman walked in Miu Miu’s spring/summer 2027 show at the Palais d’Iéna on Sunday 4 October, in what multiple outlets describe as her first-ever runway appearance. The Independent (5 October 2026) reports she wore “a black leather blazer with a matching knee-length skirt on the royal purple runway”, joining a cast that included Emma Corrin, Gigi Hadid and Jamie Bell. Lenta (7 October 2026, sourcing a Vogue Germany Instagram post, photo Estrop/Getty Images) corroborates the core facts – 52 years old, Miu Miu show, black leather suit of fitted blazer and below-the-knee skirt, grey hair in a messy ponytail – and adds two details: a blue jumper with a deep V-neck and brown mules. Footwear accounts differ: Lenta reports brown mules, while Colman’s own later account via PEOPLE describes brown loafers as “too big”. British Vogue (4 October 2026) notes the 52-year-old had revealed the grey look earlier in the week while promoting her film Wicker.
The wider line-up underlines that this was casting, not a cameo accident. British Vogue lists Hamnet actor Noah Jupe, Jamie Bell, Louisa Jacobson and Ella Bleu Travolta among the show’s actors and celebrity offspring; The Independent adds that celebrity casting “has become something of a Miu Miu tradition, with previous shows putting actors including Willem Dafoe, Richard E Grant and Gillian Anderson on the runway”.
The clothes around the casting told their own story: checked blazers with tartan skirts and technical sports tops, cropped rash-vest-like shirts above knee-length pleats, running trainers with tailoring, leather and crocodile-effect skirt suits, wraparound halternecks in lime, orange and yellow polka dots. The Independent’s reading – “sports day meets the office with a little school uniform thrown in” – is as good a summary as any of Miuccia Prada’s collision of boardroom, gym and evening.
Age was not the week’s only casting conversation. According to Lenta (7 October 2026, single-source: video from a WWD fashion director’s Instagram, photo IK ALDAMA/Legion-Media), male models walked the Vivienne Westwood show in toga-like dresses – including a sheer thigh-slit style with a deep neckline, a floral-print version and a voluminous white draped dress worn with gladiator-ballet-flat hybrid shoes – while Courrèges sent male models out in mini A-line dresses as part of a unisex accent. The piece contains no direct quotes. It belongs in this article for one reason: it shows the SS27 runway was negotiating several dress codes at once – age, gender, office, gym – and the Colman moment was the one where the negotiation registered most widely.
The one quote that matters – in her own words
Speaking to Esquire UK at the BFI London Film Festival screening of Wicker, Colman gave the only direct account of the decision that counts, quoted via PEOPLE (9 October 2026):
“I can’t believe I said yes to it, but I did a runway for Miu Miu. But then I thought, how often does a 52-year-old woman with gray hair get asked to do a runway? My teenage self went, ‘Just say yes, just do it.’ And I was terrified, it was so scary.”
The same report adds her backstage footnotes: she “got lost” on the runway and asked an audience member to guide her, the brown loafers were “too big”, and walking the show was nonetheless “the biggest high of my life”. No other Colman quotes about the show are used in this article; anything else attributed to her elsewhere is unverified for our purposes.
Why 52 with grey hair is the story – not the stunt
Fashion has always used actors on runways. What made this different is the explicit framing around age and hair. Colman did not walk as a de-aged version of herself; she walked with long grey hair, at 52, in a medium – the runway – that still skews overwhelmingly towards models under 25. The grey was not styled away. Editorially, it read as the show’s most subversive accessory – a claim about meaning, not a collection note.
This sits inside a small but real pattern. In 2022, Andie MacDowell, then 68, walked the L’Oréal Paris show during Paris Fashion Week with silver curls; in 2025 Helen Mirren, then 80, walked the same show in a sparkling silver top with a grey-blonde bob (PEOPLE via Yahoo, 9 October 2026). Mirren’s own gloss on the subject – “I think women were just so terrified of having white or gray hair because it immediately put them into a different category… why not just embrace it?” – is on record in the same report. Colman is the first of the three to do it for Miu Miu, a house whose influence on how young women actually dress is arguably greater than any beauty-brand runway.
The industry context is designer Miuccia Prada’s stated preference for “characters rather than a conventional cast of models” (The Independent, 5 October 2026). Character casting cuts both ways: it opens the runway to faces with biographies, and it risks reducing older women to one slot per show – the permission slip that proves the rule. The test is what happens next season, and the season after.
What the schedule does not show
A Miu Miu finale place is a line in the FHCM calendar. Behind it sit the structural facts that keep runways young: sample sizes, street-casting pipelines built around agencies’ new-faces boards, and the economics of a showroom at the Palais de Tokyo (30 September – 6 October 2026) where buyers order what photographs well on a 20-year-old body. None of that changes because one Oscar winner walked once.
There is also the question nobody in fashion likes to itemise: pay and power. Did Colman walk for a fee, for friendship, for the film-press cycle around Wicker? None of the verified reports say. What is documented is the front row – Emma Mackey, Amelia Dimoldenberg, Alexa Chung and others at the Palais d’Iéna – and the press cycle that followed, which served the house, the actress and the week in roughly equal measure.
How to read the moment if you work in the creative industries
Three practical notes, none of them about clothes.
First, documentation beats intention. Colman’s grey hair had already been photographed on the Wicker press run before the show; by the time she walked, the image had a backstory the press could file in one line. Anyone proposing an unconventional casting – older, disabled, non-sample-size – should arrive with the pictures already in circulation.
Second, the ask matters more than the answer. Colman’s own account centres on rarity: “how often does a 52-year-old woman with gray hair get asked?” The bottleneck is the invitation, not the willingness. Casting directors who want an older runway can simply do what Miu Miu did – ask.
Third, one walk is PR; two seasons is policy. Watch the SS28 castings, not the SS27 headlines. If houses keep booking women over 50 when there is no film to promote and no grey-hair news cycle to ride, the Colman moment will have been a beginning. If not, it was a very good Sunday.
