On 4 December 1872, the crew of a Canadian brigantine called Dei Gratia spotted a vessel drifting erratically through the Atlantic about 400 nautical miles east of the Azores. When Captain David Morehouse sent men aboard the derelict ship, they found a scene that would haunt the maritime imagination for over a century and a half: the Mary Celeste was completely deserted. Her cargo of 1,701 barrels of industrial ethanol was largely intact, her provisions were untouched, the captain’s belongings were scattered in his cabin, but not a single soul remained on board. Ten people – Captain Benjamin Briggs, his wife Sarah, their two-year-old daughter Sophia, and seven crew members – had simply vanished.
For 154 years, the fate of those ten people spawned explanations ranging from mutiny and piracy to sea monsters, UFO abductions, and interdimensional portals. In spring 2026, two chemists at the University of Manchester built a scale model of the brigantine, filled its hold with ethanol vapour, and set it on fire. The result, they say, is the most plausible account of what actually happened – and it is terrifyingly mundane.
The Ship That Would Not Die
The Mary Celeste had a troubled history long before she became history’s most famous ghost ship. Built in 1861 at Spencer’s Island, Nova Scotia, and originally christened Amazon, the vessel lost her first captain to pneumonia during the maiden voyage and collided with another ship in the English Channel. After running aground in a storm off Cape Breton Island in 1867, the wreck was sold, repaired, and renamed. She passed through several owners before a group that included Benjamin Briggs acquired her in 1871.
Briggs was a deeply religious man and a teetotaller – an unusual choice of character for a ship about to carry 1,700-odd barrels of pure alcohol from New York to Genoa. He handpicked a sober crew, brought his wife and child aboard for the crossing, and set sail on 7 November 1872. The last entry in the ship’s log, dated 25 November, placed the Mary Celeste roughly six nautical miles from the Azores. Nine days later, she was found without her crew.
A Century of Wild Theories
The Gibraltar salvage inquiry that followed the discovery did nothing to resolve the mystery. Attorney General Frederick Solly-Flood, described by historians as stubborn and not especially bright, fixated on the theory that German crew members had mutinied, killed the captain, and abandoned ship. He ignored evidence that Briggs was a devout man who hired only sober sailors, and he conveniently overlooked the fact that nine barrels in the hold were empty – not because the crew had drunk the contents, but because those particular barrels had been made from porous American red oak, which allowed the ethanol to seep out.
Conan Doyle’s 1884 short story “J. Habakuk Jephson’s Statement” – a fictional account published under a pseudonym and mistakenly reprinted by the Boston Herald as fact – injected new life into the legend. The story featured a vengeful former slave; the real ship had no such passenger. Subsequent decades brought theories of insurance fraud, a conspiracy between Briggs and Morehouse (debunked by the fact that the Dei Gratia was slower than the Mary Celeste and left New York eight days later), and even a suggestion that Briggs had murdered everyone in a fit of religious mania before killing himself.
In the late twentieth century, the UFO contingent arrived. One theory held that the crew had been “abducted by aliens”; another claimed they had been “instantly transported to another dimension.” Both were based not on evidence but on details from Conan Doyle’s fiction – the famous image of a hot meal left on the table and tea still steaming in cups, details that simply do not appear in any contemporary account.
A Theory Born in 1910
The most rational explanation was proposed as early as 1910 by Arthur Putnam, an American insurance investigator. Putnam noticed a reference in the ship’s log to a loud noise in the hold – a “gрохот,” or rumbling – and connected it to the ethanol cargo. His reasoning was straightforward: the Mary Celeste had loaded her cargo in a New York winter, when hold temperatures sat well below the flash point of ethanol vapour (13°C). As the ship sailed into warmer Azorian waters, the alcohol that had leaked from the porous barrels – an estimated 1,100 litres – would have vaporised into the sealed hold, mixing with air to create a volatile atmosphere. A single spark, from a pipe, a lantern, or metal rubbing against metal, could have triggered a concussive blast powerful enough to blow open the hatches, but brief enough to leave no scorch marks on the wood.
The theory explained everything: the blown-off hatch covers found on the deck, the absence of burn damage, the intact cargo, the missing lifeboat. But it lacked the drama of krakens and mutineers, and for most of the twentieth century it was overshadowed by more colourful speculation.
The Manchester Experiment
In 2006, Professor Andrea Sella at UCL Chemistry conducted an early test of the vapour-explosion hypothesis, using butane as a stand-in for ethanol vapour and paper to simulate the ship’s structure. The results were suggestive but not conclusive. In spring 2026, the Mary Celeste story was revisited for a Channel 5 documentary, and this time the experimenters went further.
Dr Jack Rowbotham and Dr Frank Mair at the University of Manchester constructed a 1:18 scale wooden model of the Mary Celeste and filled the hold with a proportional mixture of ethanol vapour and air. At cold temperatures – replicating conditions in New York in November – a spark from an electrical wire produced no reaction. When the model and the ethanol were warmed to simulate Azorean conditions, the same spark triggered an explosion that blew the hatches clean off the deck and buckled the model’s planking. The blue flame reached approximately 2,000°C, yet left no char, no soot, no visible trace.
“One thing that has always been suspicious to us as chemists is that their only cargo was almost pure ethanol,” Rowbotham told the Daily Mail. “They are basically sitting on a bomb, and they’re hanging around smoking pipes.”
The absence of burn marks, which had long been cited as evidence against the explosion theory, turned out to be exactly what the chemistry predicted. Ethanol and oxygen burn so efficiently that the flame flashes through the space in a fraction of a second – long enough to generate a terrifying blast and a wall of heat, but far too briefly to ignite solid wood. As Rowbotham put it: “If we hadn’t filmed it, you wouldn’t have been able to see that there had been an explosion on the ship.”
The Crew’s Final Moments
If Rowbotham and Mair are correct – and they stress they have demonstrated plausibility, not certainty – the sequence of events was grimly logical. Briggs and his crew felt or heard the first explosion in the hold. Perhaps a hatch blew open; perhaps a rush of hot air and blue flame surged through the companionway. The crew scrambled to lower the lifeboat and lash it to the Mary Celeste with ropes cut from the rigging. In the panic, they did not – or could not – take sufficient provisions, and they failed to make a final entry in the log.
Once the lifeboat was at a safe distance, the wind caught the Mary Celeste‘s sails. The ship surged forward, the mooring line parted, and the crew were left in an open boat in the mid-Atlantic. Then, as Professor Sella observed, “you get a blue flash and heat, and all the doors open – that’s terrifying” to men with no formal education in chemistry. There was no ghost, no monster, no extraterrestrial. There was only ethanol, a spark, and the cold mathematics of flash points.
None of the ten people were ever found. The Mary Celeste herself drifted on for another thirteen years before being deliberately wrecked off the coast of Haiti in 1885, the final act in an insurance fraud – a fittingly prosaic end for a ship whose legend far outstripped her reality.
Why It Still Matters
The solved and unsolved mysteries of the Mary Celeste tell us something about how culture processes the unknown. For a century and a half, the gap between what investigators found and what they could explain was filled not with chemistry but with storytelling – with Conan Doyle’s literary invention, with the human appetite for the uncanny, with the conviction that something so strange must have a strange explanation.
The Manchester experiment does not diminish the Mary Celeste as a cultural object. If anything, it deepens the tragedy. The crew did not face an unknowable evil; they faced a perfectly explicable chemical reaction that their education gave them no tools to understand. The gap between the science and the sailors’ experience is itself the most compelling part of the story – a reminder that the distance between knowledge and ignorance can be as deadly as any monster.
For a publication devoted to contemporary culture, the Mary Celeste remains a case study in how a factual mystery becomes a narrative one – how a missing log entry and nine empty barrels became raw material for fiction, film, and folklore. The history of the story is, in the end, as interesting as the history of the ship.
