One of the richest districts in England.

Clapham Common

The first district in the UK where the average household income reached £100,000, it seems, was Clapham Common. In any case, this is according to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which showed that households in Clapham Common West had an average income of £108,100 at the end of 2020.

Figures over the years

Although 2020 may seem like a long time ago, these data are among the most recent published by the ONS. After all, these figures are only revealed every few years, focusing specifically on incomes in small areas of England and Wales with populations of 5,000 or more.

West London

West London was recognized as the wealthiest part of England overall, while the City of London came in second after Clapham South West with an average household income of £101,800. So why Clapham? Well, this district is centrally located and well-connected to the City of London. It has long been popular among young professionals (aged 25-34) who share spaces with peers in similar high-paying jobs.

Households

The indicators for Clapham Common were roughly three times higher than the national average and several times higher than the area with the lowest average household income. Households in Grimsby East Marsh and Port, for example, apparently earn an average of just £22,200 per year.

High income

However, it is worth noting that residents of Clapham Common may not have the most money out of all London districts. After factors such as housing costs, taxes, and household sizes were taken into account, Hans Town in Kensington and Chelsea was identified by the ONS as having the highest disposable income.
