It is during this time that one of Dr. Seuss’ most iconic characters, the Grinch, emerges as a symbol of transformation, redemption and the true meaning of the festive season.
This beloved Christmas classic follows the mischievous Grinch as he embarks on a mission to steal Christmas from the jolly inhabitants of Whoville. But his encounter with the indomitable spirit of togetherness and love leads to an unexpected transformation, revealing the profound message that the spirit of Christmas transcends material possessions and underscores the importance of compassion and community.
Story about Grinch was first told in the book How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1957) by the American writer and artist Dr. Seuss. Since then, the story of the Grinch has been adapted several times by different directors and studios. Here are some of them:
1️⃣ The animated film How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966). This is the first adaptation of the tale made using the technique of drawn animation. The director of the film was Chuck Jones, and the voice of the Grinch belonged to the actor Boris Karloff. The film was well received by critics and audiences and became a classic of the Christmas genre.
2️⃣ Feature film How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000). This is the first full-length live-action adaptation of the tale, directed by Ron Howard. The lead role was played by Jim Carrey, who wore special make-up and a Grinch costume. The film was commercially successful, but received mixed reviews from critics, who praised Carrey’s performance but criticised the script and direction.
3️⃣ Animated film The Grinch (2018). This is the second animated adaptation of the fairy tale, made in the technique of computer animation. The directors of the film were Scott Mosier and Yarrow Cheney, and the voice of the Grinch was given by Benedict Cumberbatch. The film was well received by critics and audiences, who noted its visual appeal, humour and kindness.
