Nicolas Winding Refn is a Danish director, screenwriter, and producer known for his unique approach to cinema. He became famous for his films such as “Drive”, “Only God Forgives”, and “The Neon Demon”. However, recently he decided to take on a new project – the adaptation of Enid Blyton’s popular book series “The Famous Five”.
“The Famous Five” is a series of detective novels that tell the adventures of a group of children solving various mysteries. The books were written in the 1940s and have since become classics of children’s literature. They have been adapted into films several times, but Nicolas Winding Refn decided to approach this material in a completely new way.
In an interview with The Guardian, Nicolas Winding Refn talked about his approach to adapting “The Famous Five” and how he intends to change the perception of this story.
One of Nicolas Winding Refn’s main goals was to create a modern version of “The Famous Five” that would be interesting not only to children but also to adult audiences. He believes that the original books have the potential to be deeper and darker than they initially seem.
“I’ve always felt that ‘The Famous Five’ has the potential to be something more than just a children’s story,” the director said. “I’m interested in exploring themes of friendship, betrayal, fear, and mystery through the lens of this story.”
To achieve this goal, Nicolas Winding Refn decided to set the plot in modern times and change the characters’ images. He also intends to add new elements to the plot to make it more engaging for the audience.
“I want to preserve the spirit of the original books, but at the same time introduce something new and unexpected,” he said. “I’m interested in showing more complex relationships between the characters and adding elements of drama and tension that were not present in the original books.”
Nicolas Winding Refn also talked about how he chose actors for his project. He believes that the right choice of actors plays a key role in creating the atmosphere of the film.
“It’s very important to me that the actors are not only talented but also have a special charisma,” the director said. “I want the audience to love my characters and believe in their adventures.”
Nicolas Winding Refn also shared his vision of the visual style of the film. He believes it is important to create a unique aesthetic that would distinguish his version of “The Famous Five” from previous adaptations.
“I like to experiment with images and colors to create a special atmosphere for the film,” he said. “I want the audience to be immersed in the world of ‘The Famous Five’ and feel every emotion of the characters.”
Nicolas Winding Refn also noted that he is interested in using music as an important element in his films. He believes that well-chosen music can enhance the emotional component of the film and help the audience dive deeper into the plot.
“Music plays a very important role in my films,” the director said. “I want to use it as another way to convey the emotions and mood of the characters.”
Nicolas Winding Refn assured that his version of “The Famous Five” will be full of unexpected twists and exciting moments. He hopes that his film will be interesting not only for fans of the original books but also for a new generation of viewers.
“I want to create a film that will be exciting and engaging for all ages,” Nicolas Winding Refn said. “I believe that ‘The Famous Five’ has the potential to become a classic not only in children’s cinema but in cinema as a whole.”
