The MCU is in trouble. The super-heroic franchise that has dominated the box office and the pop culture for over a decade has lost its main antagonist for the next phase of its epic saga. Jonathan Majors, the actor who played Kang the Conqueror, the time-traveling tyrant who was supposed to be the next Thanos, was fired from Marvel after being found guilty of domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend. Now, Marvel has to find a way to replace Kang and keep the Avengers alive.
Kang the Conqueror was introduced in the MCU in the second season of the Disney+ series Loki, where he was revealed to be the mastermind behind the Time Variance Authority, a mysterious organization that polices the multiverse. He also appeared in the movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, where he clashed with the titular heroes. He was expected to be the main villain of the next Avengers movie, which was rumored to be titled Avengers: Kang’s Dynasty.
But after Majors’ scandal, Marvel had to cut ties with him and scrap his scenes from the upcoming projects. This left a huge gap in the MCU’s narrative, as Kang was supposed to be the catalyst for the multiverse saga, the overarching theme of the fourth phase. How can Marvel fill this gap and save the Avengers? Here are three possible options.
Option 1: A Quiet Recast
The most obvious option is to simply recast Kang with another actor, without making a big deal out of it. Marvel could issue a brief press release announcing the new actor and hope that the fans would accept the change. This option has some advantages, as it would allow Marvel to stick to its original plan and avoid major reshoots or rewrites. It would also respect the continuity of the MCU and the character of Kang.
However, this option also has some drawbacks, as it would risk alienating the fans who liked Majors’ performance and who would notice the difference in Kang’s appearance and personality. It would also be hard to find an actor who could match Majors’ charisma and talent, and who would be willing to take on such a controversial role. Moreover, it would be difficult to explain why Kang looks different in different timelines and universes, as he was supposed to have the same face in all of them.
Option 2: A Recast Through Loki
Another option is to use the plot device of Loki to justify the recast of Kang. Loki, the god of mischief and brother of Thor, has the ability to change his appearance and create illusions. He also has access to the multiverse and the TVA, where he met Kang in the finale of the second season. Loki could use his powers to alter Kang’s appearance, either for his own benefit or for a greater purpose.
This option would have some benefits, as it would provide a plausible explanation for the recast and make use of Loki’s character and abilities. It would also create an interesting dynamic between Loki and Kang, as they would have a history and a rivalry. It would also give Marvel a chance to rewrite some of Kang’s scenes and make him more compelling and menacing.
However, this option would also have some challenges, as it would require Marvel to change the direction and tone of Loki’s series and make it more focused on Kang. It would also depend on the availability and willingness of Tom Hiddleston, the actor who plays Loki, to participate in more MCU projects. It would also raise some questions about Loki’s motivations and goals, and whether he would be a hero or a villain.
Option 3: A New Villain Altogether
The third option is to ditch Kang altogether and introduce a new villain for the Avengers to face. Marvel has a rich and diverse roster of villains from the comics, and it could choose one that would fit the theme and the scale of the multiverse saga. For example, Marvel could bring in Doctor Doom, the ruler of Latveria and one of the most iconic and powerful villains in the Marvel universe. Doctor Doom has a connection to the Fantastic Four, who are expected to join the MCU soon, and he also has a history of meddling with time and reality.
This option would have some merits, as it would allow Marvel to surprise the fans and create a fresh and exciting story. It would also give Marvel an opportunity to introduce a new character and a new franchise, and to expand the MCU’s scope and diversity. It would also avoid the controversy and the backlash that would come with recasting Kang.
However, this option would also have some risks, as it would mean abandoning Kang and wasting his potential. It would also require Marvel to rewrite and reshoot a lot of scenes and to change the title and the plot of the next Avengers movie. It would also be challenging to find a villain that would be as compelling and threatening as Kang, and that would have a connection to the existing heroes and villains.
What Will Marvel Do?
We don’t know what Marvel will do to solve the Kang dilemma, but we hope that they will make the best decision for the MCU and the fans. Whatever they do, we are sure that they will deliver an amazing and thrilling multiverse saga, and that the Avengers will rise to the challenge.
