These include iron, calcium, iodine, vitamin E, and other micronutrients, which play crucial roles in maintaining health, preventing disease, and promoting wellbeing.

Calcium deficiency compromises bone health, leading to an increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures, particularly among older populations. Iron deficiency, meanwhile, is a leading cause of anaemia, a condition that affects billions, particularly women and children, resulting in reduced cognitive function, fatigue, and a weakened immune system.
Lack of iodine is a significant contributor to thyroid dysfunction, impairing metabolism and leading to developmental issues in children. Women, in particular, suffer disproportionately from nutrient deficiencies. The research from The Lancet Global Health highlighted that women are more likely to experience deficiencies in iron, iodine, and vitamin B12, especially during pregnancy, which can affect maternal and child health.
Globally, nutrient deficiencies also fuel broader public health crises. The absence of vitamin C, essential for immune function and collagen production, weakens the body’s defences against infections and diseases, placing populations at higher risk, particularly in low-income countries.

- Calcium: Essential for maintaining healthy bones and teeth, calcium also plays a vital role in muscle function, nerve signalling, and blood clotting. Dairy products, fortified plant-based milk, and leafy greens such as kale and broccoli are excellent sources of calcium.
- Iodine: Vital for thyroid function, iodine deficiency can lead to goitre and developmental issues in children. Iodine-rich foods include seaweed, fish, dairy products, and iodised salt.
- Vitamin C: Known for its role in immune support and collagen production, vitamin C deficiency can lead to scurvy and weakened immunity. Citrus fruits, strawberries, bell peppers, and broccoli are excellent sources of this nutrient.
- Vitamin E: As an antioxidant, vitamin E protects cells from damage and supports skin and eye health. Nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils are primary sources of vitamin E.
- Folate: Important for DNA synthesis and red blood cell formation, folate is particularly critical during pregnancy for preventing neural tube defects. Folate can be found in dark leafy greens, legumes, and fortified grains.
