Beneath the Treasury: The Hidden Tomb That Could Rewrite Petra's History

For more than two centuries, the Treasury at Petra has drawn visitors through a narrow sandstone canyon to gaze upon its rose-hued façade, a structure so impossibly perfect that Hollywood cast it as the resting place of the Holy Grail. Millions have stood before it, posed for photographs, and walked away convinced they understood the place. They were wrong. Beneath the very ground where those millions have shuffled, archaeologists have now opened a sealed tomb containing twelve complete human skeletons – the largest single collection of Nabataean remains ever recovered from the ancient city – and the find is forcing scholars to reconsider everything they thought they knew about the people who carved this metropolis from rock.

The Discovery That Defied Expectations

In the summer of 2024, a joint Jordanian-American team led by Dr Pearce Paul Creasman, executive director of the American Center of Research (ACOR), received rare permission from the Jordanian government to excavate beneath the Khazneh, or Treasury. The team had spent months deploying ground-penetrating radar, electrical resistivity, and magnetometry across the monument’s courtyard, searching for evidence of subterranean chambers that had been suspected since two partial tombs were found on the left side of the structure in 2003. Those earlier finds, while significant, yielded fragmentary remains and were never fully published. Funding dried up, and the site was left sealed.

This time, the technology told a different story. The radar scans revealed strong symmetrical anomalies on the right side of the Treasury, mirroring the known tombs on the left. Rather than digging straight down through solid sandstone – which would have damaged the monument – the team tunneled carefully from the outside toward the void. What they found inside was unprecedented: a chamber measuring roughly eighteen feet by eighteen feet and nine feet tall, containing twelve articulated skeletons in their original burial positions, alongside grave goods of bronze, iron, and ceramics.

“If you look at all the other tombs in the Petra area, only a few have ever contained any human remains, and those are very fragmentary, whereas this has got twelve complete bodies within it,” Professor Richard Bates of the University of St Andrews, who served as the project’s geophysicist, told NPR. The remains included men, women, and children, suggesting a communal burial rather than an individual interment.

Who Were the Nabataeans?

To grasp the significance of this find, one must understand the civilisation that created it. The Nabataeans were an Arab people who emerged as a distinct political entity between the fourth and second centuries BC, building their capital at Raqmu – present-day Petra – at the convergence of critical trade routes linking the Arabian Peninsula with the Mediterranean. Their wealth derived from controlling the incense trade, transporting frankincense and myrrh from southern Arabia through their desert stronghold to the port of Gaza and beyond.

At their peak, the Nabataean kingdom stretched from Damascus to the Hejaz, encompassing parts of modern-day Jordan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Egypt. They were master engineers who developed sophisticated water management systems to sustain a city of perhaps thirty thousand people in one of the most arid landscapes on earth. They were also accomplished potters, producing vessels with walls as thin as one and a half millimetres – ceramics better suited to ceremonial use than the robust Roman wares that travelled well by sea.

Yet for all their ingenuity, the Nabataeans left remarkably few written records. “The Nabataeans didn’t really write about themselves,” Dr Lucy Wadeson, an expert on Nabataean funerary traditions at the University of Edinburgh, told The Guardian. “So our ancient sources are largely from outsiders – Greeks and Romans.” This silence makes every archaeological discovery from Petra disproportionately valuable: each artefact, each skeleton, each trace of organic material becomes a page in a history that was never written down.

The Egalitarian Enigma

One of the most intriguing puzzles surrounding the Nabataeans concerns their burial customs. Classical sources describe a society in which the king was more closely integrated with commoners than rulers of neighbouring civilisations. Archaeological evidence has largely supported this picture: unlike the grandiose mausoleums of Egyptian pharaohs or Roman emperors, Nabataean tombs have shown relatively little differentiation between royal and non-royal burials.

The tomb beneath the Treasury complicates this picture. Its location – directly beneath the most prominent structure in the city – implies that the individuals interred there held substantial status. The presence of bronze and iron artefacts, materials reserved for significant occasions, further suggests high rank. Yet the absence of overtly lavish grave goods leaves the question unresolved.

“The burials in this tomb are articulated, so the bones haven’t been rummaged around and moved, so that’s exceedingly rare,” Dr Creasman told CNN. “We were hopeful to find anything that might tell us more about the ancient people and place – human remains can be a really valuable tool in that regard.”

Dr Tim Kinnaird, who sampled and dated the sediment surrounding the burials at St Andrews, has proposed that the tomb was most likely built as a mausoleum and crypt at the beginning of the first century AD, possibly for Aretas IV Philopatris, a Nabataean king whose reign is often regarded as the kingdom’s golden age. The dating places the tomb’s construction squarely within the period when the Treasury itself is thought to have been built – a coincidence that may not be coincidental at all.

Caution Among the Experts

Not everyone has been swept up in the excitement. Dr Wadeson offered a more measured assessment to The Guardian: “I think it’s being a little hyped up in the media.” She noted that the tomb’s existence was already known to the Jordanian Department of Antiquities, which had excavated adjacent tombs in 2003 and 2005 and deliberately left this one closed for future investigation. “It’s not as if it’s something new,” she said.

Wadeson’s scepticism is not a dismissal of the find’s importance but a reminder that archaeological discoveries are often the product of decades of cumulative work rather than a single dramatic moment. The tombs on the left side of the Treasury, excavated in 2005 under Dr Suleiman Farajat and Sami Nawafleh, recovered the remains of at least eleven individuals, though those results were never formally published – a gap in the scholarly record that the current excavation may finally help to fill.

What the Bones Will Tell Us

The next phase of analysis promises to be transformative. The research team plans to conduct DNA extraction to determine whether the twelve individuals were genetically related, which could reveal whether the tomb served a single family or a broader social group. Strontium isotope analysis may reveal the geographical origins of the buried, indicating whether they were lifelong residents of Petra or migrants from other parts of the Nabataean world. Carbon dating will refine the chronology, while examination of teeth and bone density could shed light on diet, physical labour, and disease.

“By analysing the skeleton material, the teeth, the bones, we can tell things about their lifestyle,” Professor Bates said. “It’s going to unlock a view on Nabataean life that we’ve just never had access to before.”

In 2025, ACOR partnered with Iconem, a French company specialising in digital heritage preservation, to create a complete three-dimensional model of Petra using photogrammetry, laser scanning, and LiDAR. The goal is a digital twin of the city that will allow researchers worldwide to study its structures without physical access – and to monitor the site for deterioration caused by tourism, climate change, and natural erosion.

The Indiana Jones Effect and the Future of Petra

The timing of the discovery – broadcast as a two-part special on Discovery Channel’s Expedition Unknown, hosted by Josh Gates – has inevitably invited comparisons with the fictional adventures of Indiana Jones, whose search for the Holy Grail in The Last Crusade used the Treasury as its climactic backdrop. Gates himself leaned into the parallels: “This is perhaps the most significant tomb ever found at Petra and a discovery of historic proportions.”

The ceramic vessel found in the hands of one of the skeletons – the top of a broken jug, most likely dating to the first century BC – bore an eerie resemblance to the cinematic Grail, though researchers were careful to note the distinction. The similarity was no accident: Lucasfilm’s Deborah Fine had conducted painstaking research into Nabataean pottery to ensure the film’s props were historically plausible.

Such intersections between popular culture and archaeological science are double-edged. They generate public interest and funding, but they can also distort expectations. Petra attracts more than a million visitors annually, making it Jordan’s most important tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site of global significance. The challenge for scholars is to communicate the genuine importance of the find – which lies not in cinematic romance but in the painstaking reconstruction of a lost society – without feeding the mythology that surrounds it.

A City Still Giving Up Its Secrets

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the 2024 excavation is what it implies about how much remains undiscovered. Professor Bates noted that ground-penetrating radar has detected additional voids beneath the Treasury’s courtyard that could contain further tombs. “It is highly likely that there are more to be found,” he said, “and so we need the funding to get back and continue the studies.”

Dr Creasman echoed the sentiment. “People think they know Petra. They recognise the Treasury,” he told the Smithsonian. “But all these people walk by, and there’s so much more under our feet.”

The Nabataeans built a civilisation that endured for centuries in one of the harshest environments on earth, then vanished so completely that their capital was lost to the Western world until the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt stumbled upon it in 1812. Two centuries of excavation have revealed extraordinary structures but precious few of the people who built them. This tomb, sealed for two millennia beneath the most famous monument in the Middle East, may finally give the Nabataeans a voice – not through their own writings, which may never surface, but through the irrefutable testimony of their bones.

The analysis is ongoing. The results, when they arrive, will not merely add a footnote to the history of Petra. They may rewrite the opening chapter.
