For decades, the story of humanity’s most enigmatic monuments followed a familiar script. Easter Island’s moai were relics of a civilisation that devoured itself. Göbekli Tepe was a mysterious temple abandoned by nomads who vanished into the dust. Nan Madol was the work of sorcerers, or perhaps a lost race, because surely the people of the Pacific could not have moved quarter-of-a-million tons of volcanic basalt without wheels or metal tools. The old narratives were tidy, flattering to Western assumptions, and – as it turns out – largely wrong.
In the past two years, a convergence of ancient DNA analysis, 3D photogrammetry, physics-based field experiments and, crucially, indigenous-led research has begun to dismantle these comfortable fictions. What has emerged is not a single revised history but a fundamental shift in who gets to tell the story and how it is told.
The Quarry That Refused to Die
In November 2025, Carl Lipo of Binghamton University and Terry Hunt of the University of Arizona published what may be the most significant study of the Rano Raraku quarry in a generation. Using 11,000 overlapping drone photographs processed into a high-resolution 3D model – the first of its kind for the site – they identified 426 moai in various stages of completion, 341 carving trenches, and 133 voids where statues had been successfully extracted. Their conclusion, published in PLOS One, was quietly revolutionary: the quarry was not the output of a centralised workforce under the command of all-powerful chiefs. It was a decentralised network of independent kin groups, each operating within its own zone, each with its own extraction techniques and finishing styles.
“The sheer scale seemed to demand centralised coordination,” Lipo told CNN. “The presence of monuments became circular evidence for hierarchy. Monuments meant chiefs because chiefs built monuments.” The 3D model broke that circular logic. The variability between quarry zones suggested something closer to competitive craftsmanship among autonomous family groups – not top-down command.
This finding dovetails with earlier experimental work. In October 2025, Lipo and Hunt published findings in the Journal of Archaeological Science confirming that the moai really did “walk.” By building a 4.35-tonne replica with the distinctive D-shaped base and forward lean of the road statues, they moved it 100 metres using only ropes and 18 people in 40 minutes. The statues were not dragged or rolled. They were rocked side to side in a controlled zigzag, a technique that required no wooden rollers and no deforestation – a direct challenge to the collapse narrative popularised by Jared Diamond in his 2005 book Collapse.
The Genome That Ended Ecocide
The genetic evidence has been equally damning for the old story. In September 2024, a landmark study in Nature reconstructed the genomic history of 15 ancient Rapanui individuals, radiocarbon-dated between 1670 and 1950 CE. Led by J. Victor Moreno-Mayar and Anna-Sapfo Malaspinas, the team found no evidence of a severe population bottleneck in the 1600s – the supposed moment of ecological self-destruction. Instead, the effective population size appeared to have been steadily increasing after initial peopling until the 1860s, when Peruvian slave raids and subsequent epidemics devastated the island.
The study also confirmed something remarkable: ancient and present-day Rapanui carry approximately 10 per cent Native American admixture, introduced between 1250 and 1430 CE – well before European contact.
“The traditional story, popularised by Diamond and others, assumes that powerful chiefs drove unsustainable monument-building, causing deforestation, agricultural failure, and a population crash,” Lipo said. “But if monument production were decentralised, with autonomous communities making independent decisions, there would be no central authority to drive the island over an ecological cliff.”
Living Temples, Not Abandoned Shrines
If the old Rapa Nui narrative has crumbled, so too has the long-held assumption that Göbekli Tepe was a purely ceremonial site visited by nomads who then moved on. The 2025 excavation season at the 12,000-year-old site in southeastern Turkey, led by archaeologist Necmi Karul under the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s Taş Tepeler project, uncovered a striking human statue with defined head and torso features between Enclosures B and D – following the 2023 discovery of a life-sized painted wild boar, its red, white and black pigments still visible after eleven millennia.
More significantly, excavations have revealed domestic architecture – houses, cisterns, water channels, grinding stones, and flint sickles – alongside the monumental enclosures. The late Klaus Schmidt, who directed excavations from 1995 until his death in 2014, famously declared that “first came the temple, then the city.” The evidence now suggests the temple and the city were contemporaneous. People lived at Göbekli Tepe permanently, processing wild cereals and managing water resources. The site was not a cathedral in the desert. It was a town – arguably the world’s first – that happened to contain monumental religious structures.
A 2024 study by Martin Sweatman of the University of Edinburgh revealed that Pillar 43, the “Vulture Stone,” contains 365 V-shaped symbols organised into 12 lunar months with 11 epagomenal solar days – a lunisolar calendar millennia before the Greeks. The constellation carvings appear to memorialise the Younger Dryas comet impact of approximately 10,850 BCE, which triggered a 1,200-year mini ice age.
The Taş Tepeler project has also shown that Göbekli Tepe was not isolated. It sits within a network of at least 12 related Neolithic sites in the Şanlıurfa region, including Karahan Tepe, where a 2.3-metre seated human statue – the earliest known realistic monumental human depiction – was unearthed.
The Venice of the Pacific Fights for Survival
Nan Madol, the sprawling ceremonial capital of the Saudeleur dynasty on the eastern shore of Pohnpei in Micronesia, presents a different kind of challenge. Its 92 artificial islets, constructed from an estimated 250,000 tons of columnar basalt transported from volcanic vents on the opposite side of the island, were built without draft animals, wheeled carts, or metal tools. The construction began as early as the 10th to 12th centuries CE – centuries earlier than previously believed, according to research presented at the UNESCO World Heritage Committee’s extended 47th session in 2025.
That session proved significant. Nan Madol has been on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger since 2016, threatened by vegetation overgrowth, siltation of canals, and intensifying storm surges driven by climate change. In 2018, the Cultural Site Research and Management Foundation was awarded a US Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation grant to develop a sustainable conservation plan. National Geographic Explorer Albert Lin visited the site in early 2026, using advanced scanning technology to map the underwater structures and document the engineering – a mortarless “Lincoln Log” technique of alternating headers and stretchers that allowed tidal currents to flow through the walls rather than against them, preventing hydraulic destruction for centuries.
The Saudeleur dynasty collapsed around 1628 CE when the warrior Isokelekel invaded from a neighbouring island, dismantling the centralised forced-labour system that had sustained the city. Without rulers compelling regional chiefs to transport food and fresh water from the mainland, the coral city became uninhabitable. The people did not vanish. They returned to a decentralised system of tribal chiefdoms – a pattern remarkably similar to what the latest research suggests happened on Rapa Nui.
Who Owns the Past?
Running through all three sites is a question that transcends archaeology: who has the right to interpret, curate and care for these monuments? The Rapanui are answering it with increasing force. In 2024, Indiana University completed its first international repatriation of ancestral human remains to Easter Island, returning a cranium linked to Pakomio Mā’ori, a survivor of the 1862 Peruvian slave raids. Friar Francisco Nahoe, Mā’ori’s great-great-grandson and the North American delegate of Te Mau Hatu, the Rapa Nui council of elders, worked with the university on the return.
“We, their modern descendants, believe it is our duty to find and recover their remains,” Nahoe told National Indigenous Times. The Nature study’s confirmation that the 15 ancient individuals in French museum collections are genetically Rapanui in origin is expected to accelerate further repatriation claims.
Meanwhile, the debate over Hoa Hakananai’a – the moai taken by British sailors in 1868 and displayed in the British Museum – remains unresolved. Some Rapa Nui locals, as BBC Future reported in July 2025, quietly argue that the statue is safer in London under climate-controlled conditions and security cameras. Others view its presence in Bloomsbury as an unresolved act of colonial extraction. Chilean social media campaigns have repeatedly flooded the museum’s Instagram with repatriation demands.
On Rapa Nui itself, climate change is the immediate crisis. Rising sea levels, intensifying drought, and an October 2022 wildfire that charred roughly 80 moai at Rano Raraku have forced urgent decisions. The Ma’u Henua Indigenous community, which manages the national park, is working with the University of Florence on chemical treatments to repair fire damage, strengthen the porous volcanic tuff, and repel salt crystallisation. Drones are creating 3D scans of every standing moai before erosion erases details forever. A new museum is under construction on the island, designed to house some of the most vulnerable statues.
“It’s not just about protecting the moai – we’re protecting the moai to ensure the preservation of our people on this island,” Ariki Tepano Martin, the Ma’u Henua president, told the BBC. “Our culture lives on. It is still alive, and we can preserve our ancestors’ tradition by creating something new.”
The Lifecycle of Memory
Dale Simpson Jr, an archaeologist at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign who studies Polynesian carving tools, offers a different perspective. Many Pacific communities, he notes, purposefully destroy artefacts and regalia as part of their cultural lifecycle. “Everything’s on a lifecycle, and it begins and it ends,” he told the BBC. “We may see it as destruction, but it’s the life line of a statue.”
This tension – between preservation and permission, between the museum and the ocean, between scientific analysis and indigenous autonomy – is not a problem to be solved. It is the conversation that defines 21st-century archaeology. The old model, in which Western researchers arrived at remote sites, extracted data and artefacts, and published monographs in London or Berlin, is giving way to something messier and more honest: collaborative research in which the Rapanui, the Pohnpeians, and the communities surrounding Göbekli Tepe are not subjects but partners, not informants but authorities.
The moai are still walking. Göbekli Tepe still holds its secrets beneath 90 per cent of unexcavated earth. Nan Madol still resists the tides. But the stories we tell about them are finally catching up with the people who built them.
