Restoration of the intricate flying buttresses, the gargoyles, the heavily soot-stained exterior stonework, and the surrounding parvis (the public square in front of the cathedral) will continue seamlessly, with final completion targeted for the end of 2027 or early 2028. The interior reveals a remarkably transformed space. The fire, while devastating, provided an unprecedented opportunity to deeply clean the interior stonework, which had been blackened by centuries of candle soot and urban pollution. The newly cleaned blonde Lutetian limestone walls reflect light in a way not seen since the Middle Ages. Acoustic engineers closely monitored this cleaning process, utilizing advanced software to ensure the restored stone and new timber would maintain the cathedral’s legendary six-second acoustic reverberation time, which is vital for traditional Gregorian chants.

Furthermore, the grand organ, the largest in France with its 8,000 pipes, underwent a rigorous, four-year decontamination and restoration process. Although it miraculously escaped the flames and the deluge of water from the firefighters’ hoses, it was heavily coated in toxic lead dust. Each individual pipe had to be dismantled, meticulously cleaned, repaired, and re-voiced – a process that took specialized organ builders tens of thousands of hours to complete before it could sound again for the December inauguration ceremonies.

The resurrection of Notre-Dame de Paris transcends typical heritage conservation. It is an €845 million triumph of logistics, funding, and artisan dedication. By rejecting the temptation of a modernized, expedited rebuild, the restoration committee preserved not only the physical edifice but the intangible heritage of French craftsmanship.
