England: The Dance Life

By Tessa Nolan

In England, there is a variety of popular dances. Here are some of them:

1. Country Dance: This genre of social dance involves dancing for several couples and is a characteristic form of folk and court dances of the British Isles. In England after 1550, the term “country dance” referred to dances of the upper classes, while similar dances, usually called traditional, existed among the common people and were preserved in folk tradition. Country dances are performed in three characteristic formations: circular, “long” (double lines), and geometric (e.g. squares, triangles). They consist of a sequence of various figures.

2. Tango, tap, salsa, square dances, and street dance: These dances are also popular among the English today.

3. Historical dances: In England, there is also an interest in historical dances such as regency dance (dances of the regency era) and other styles that are inspired by past eras and culture.
