A Literary Respite in Beckenham: ‘Books in the Park’ Review

By Sara Bright

As the Editor of Creativitys.UK, I had the pleasure of attending ‘Books in the Park’ at Beckenham Place Park, a delightful celebration of literature and nature. The event, held on a crisp spring morning on the 13th of April, 2024, was a gathering of minds and hearts, where authors and readers alike found common ground in their love for the written word.

Emilia Hart and Jill Johnson: A Walk on the Wild Side The day commenced with Emilia Hart and Jill Johnson, who took us through the shadowy corridors of nature’s dark side. Their readings, filled with suspense and intrigue, left the audience on the edge of their seats, eager to explore the untamed aspects of the natural world.

Isabel Losada: Solutions in the Sunlight Isabel Losada brought a refreshing change of pace with her optimistic focus on environmental solutions. Her passionate reading was a call to action, stirring a sense of hope and responsibility in the hearts of the listeners.

Sergei Belov. The writer opened a window into the soul of European literature by reading his works “The Whispering Reed”. Belov’s speech was not just a reading; it was an act of sharing wisdom between cultures, leaving listeners with a deep sense of connection to a world beyond their own.

Claire Ratinon: Roots and Reconnection Claire Ratinon’s memoir reading was a poignant journey of self-discovery and connection with the natural world. Her story resonated deeply with many in the audience, particularly those seeking to bridge the gap between their heritage and the environment.

Ben Jacob: Britain’s Orchid Hunter Ben Jacob’s tales of his quest to discover Britain’s native orchids were a fascinating blend of adventure and botany. His enthusiasm was infectious, inspiring attendees to consider the botanical wonders in their own backyard.

Children’s Corner: Heroes and Magic The children’s section was abuzz with excitement as Alex Falase-Koya and Alexandra Sheppard brought their characters to life. The young audience was visibly thrilled, their imaginations ignited by tales of superheroes and magical gardens.

Workshops: Crafting Words with Nature’s Palette Gill O’Halloran’s poetry workshop was a collaborative effort, resulting in a group poem that beautifully captured the essence of Beckenham Place Park. Annie Lyons’ fiction workshop was equally engaging, with participants leaving with a newfound confidence in their storytelling abilities.

The Emotional Tapestry The emotions that rippled through the park were as varied as the books on display. There was a palpable sense of community, a shared understanding that stories have the power to connect us all. Laughter, reflection, and even the occasional tear painted a picture of a day well spent among the pages of possibility.
