But it is also one of the most parodied and memeified images in the internet age, appearing in countless variations and adaptations, from emojis and cartoons to political satire and social commentary. A new exhibition at the British Museum, titled The Scream: From Art to Meme, explores the history and legacy of Munch’s masterpiece, and how it has inspired and resonated with generations of artists and audiences. The exhibition features over 100 works, including original prints and drawings by Munch, as well as contemporary interpretations by Andy Warhol, Tracey Emin, Banksy and others.
